Cadillac DTS Rack And Pinion

The Rack And Pinion in Cadillac DTS automobiles is a very important assembly that is used to mechanism and translate the rotational dynamics of the steering wheel into lateral dynamics of the front wheels. This mechanism is called the rack & pinion or called a power steering in the mechanical section of the car; it is composed of two gears surrounded by a metal tube fixed on to the chassis of the car and the steering column shaft is fixed on to a pinion gear. Cadillac DTS and most of today's automobiles are equipped with power-assisted rack and pinion in which hydraulic fluid aid in the pumping of the rack within the tube whenever the steering wheel is turned. Hydraulic problems with the power rack and pinion system which may include ripped O-ring or flawed hoses will cause a car to develop a hard and gritty steering. Bad gears may create oscillation and slack in the steering, if the rotary valve is seeping it can produce dragging against the side. If the steering wheel is too loose or there is lag when steering the car, the rack & pinion assembly may have to be changed to positively determine the steered condition.

Cadillac DTS Rack And Pinion Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove the steering gear?
A: To remove the rack and pinion, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, loosen the front wheel lug nuts and apply the parking brake while blocking the rear wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Next, raise the front of the vehicle and secure it on jackstands. Remove the front wheels and disconnect the steering column intermediate shaft pinch bolt at the rack and pinion, separating the shaft from the gear. Disconnect any electrical connectors and detach the power steering line fittings from the rack and pinion, making sure to mark their positions. Then, detach the tie-rod ends from the Steering Knuckles. Support the rear of the subframe with a floor jack and loosen the rear subframe-to-body bolts, but do not remove them. Slowly lower the jack to gain access to the rack and pinion mounting bolts. If there is a heat shield, remove it. Finally, remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts and slide the rack and pinion assembly out through the left wheel well. To install, reverse the removal steps, tightening the fasteners to the specified torque. Bleed the steering system and have the front-end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
