Pontiac G6 Rack And Pinion

The Rack And Pinion in Pontiac G6 automobiles is as important assembly that enables conversion of rotational movement of a steering wheel into lateral movement of FRONT WHEELS. This mechanism involves the use of the rack and pinion in which the pinion lies within the metal tube and engages the rack gear to enable precise control of the steering system. The primary steering systems used in Pontiac G6 models are power-assisted rack and pinion steering, which convenience is achieved by a hydraulic action. These systems comprise of a cylinder that contains loaded fluid and a piston that operates from the movement of the steering wheel to pump fluid pressure to help in the movement of the rack. Manual racks were earlier used but superior G6 cars have hydraulic power rack instead improving the performance of the vehicle. One of the frequently encountered problems of the Rack And Pinion is leaks resulting from worn out seals or hoses, which cause stiffness in the steering column and possible harm if left unnoticed. Also, a noisy gear or bushing will also lead to loose steering or wandering and in such cases, a new rack and pinion is required to restore the handling of the vehicle.

Each OEM Pontiac G6 Rack And Pinion we offer is competitively priced and comes with the assurance of the manufacturer's warranty for the part. Furthermore, we guarantee the speedy delivery of your orders right to your doorstep. Our hassle-free return policy is also in place for your peace of mind.

Pontiac G6 Rack And Pinion Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove the steering gear?
A: To remove the rack and pinion, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. Then, loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove both front wheels. Next, remove the power steering fluid from the power steering reservoir. This can be done with a suction gun or by draining the fluid into a container. On four-cylinder models, remove the rear transaxle mount-to-transaxle bolt. On 3.5L and 3.9L V6 models, loosen the through-bolt on the transaxle mount near the rack and pinion. Disconnect the electrical connector and wiring harness from the downstream oxygen sensor. Remove the bolts securing the transaxle mount to the transaxle and the transaxle bracket-to-subframe nuts. Remove the heat shield from the rack and pinion on 3.6L models. Remove the long transaxle brace and the through-bolt in the rear transaxle mount. Remove the two transaxle mount bolts and the three transaxle mount bracket bolts from the rear of the subframe. Mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft Li-joint to the rack and pinion input shaft and remove the Li-joint pinch bolt and detach the Li-joint. Detach the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles. Place a drain pan under the rack and pinion and detach the power steering pressure and return lines. Remove the retainer securing the power steering lines to the right side of the subframe. Finally, remove the rack and pinion mounting fasteners and remove the rack and pinion through the left wheel opening.
