Q: How to Remove and Install Steering Gear on Chevrolet Avalanche,Silverado,Suburban,Tahoe,GMC Sierra,Yukon,Yukon Denali and Yukon XL?
A: To remove the rack and pinion on models with rack and pinion steering, first loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and remove the wheels. Remove the under-vehicle splash shield and the stabilizer bar. Mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft coupler to the rack and pinion input shaft and remove the pinch bolt. Detach the tie-rod ends and the power steering pressure and return lines from the rack and pinion. Lower the rack and pinion from the vehicle. To install, reverse the removal steps and tighten all fasteners to torque specifications. Check the power steering fluid level and bleed the system. For models with recirculating ball Rack And Pinion, raise the vehicle and remove the under-vehicle splash shield and skid plate. Mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft coupler to the rack and pinion input shaft and remove the pinch bolt. Unscrew the power steering lines and separate the relay rod from the Pitman Arm. Remove the rack and pinion retaining bolts and detach the rack and pinion from the frame. To install, reverse the removal steps and tighten all fasteners to torque specifications. Check the power steering fluid level and bleed the system.
