Chevrolet Malibu A/C Compressor Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and replace an air conditioning compressor?
A: For an air conditioner compressor to be removed and replaced, you need a professional to first discharge the air conditioning system, and then obtain the oil totals removed during the discharge process as this information is needed for replacement. After discharging the system, loosen the right front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle on jackstands and remove wheel and inner fender splash shield. You should also remove the air filter housing inlet hose in 1.5L engines. The heat shield and electrical connectors were removed from the compressor; also disconnecting compressor refrigerant line fitting and plugging all open lines and fittings to prevent contamination. To lower the compressor, remove the electrical connector bracket, upper mounting nut and stud, and lower mounting bolts. If necessary take out the compressor mounting bracket too. While installing make sure that there is balanced oil in the compressor; otherwise follow new compressor directions regarding excess oil draining. If you are changing a clutch-less replacement compressor, transfer your clutch from your old one over to it. Before attaching refrigerant line fitting replace all old O-rings with new ones lubricated with compatible refrigerant oil. Raise up compressors using a floor jack to get them into position then tighten mounting bolts to specified torque values. Complete installation by reversing steps of removal then have it evacuated, recharged, leak tested by professionals finally for a technician. When you have removed an old compressor consider refilling with new oil for proper balancing of oils in a graduated container by unscrewing its drain plug until all oil drains off completely. Write down this quantity along with that recorded earlier through refrigerant recovery. However if total amount of oil exceeds its volume in replacement compressors extra required amount must be added into it before installation. Continue with installation process after adding extra oil.
