How to remove and install rocker arms on Cadillac Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove and install the rocker arms on 4.5L and 4.9L engines, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and removing the air cleaner and AIR management valve. Remove the MAP hose from the throttle body and the right side spark plug wires and conduit. Remove the fuel vapor canister pipe bracket and drain the cooling system. Remove the heater hose and brake booster vacuum hose from the intake manifold. Then, remove the rocker arm cover, gasket seals, rocker arms, and rocker arm support. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces and inspect for wear or damage. To install, lubricate the parts with clean engine oil and use a new gasket with RTV sealant. Install the rocker arms and pivots, tighten the pivot bolts, and place each pushrod into the rocker arm seat. Install the rocker arm support, retaining nuts and bolts, rocker arm cover seals, and rocker arm cover. Connect the brake booster vacuum hose and spark plug wires. Install the air management and bracket assembly, replace the heater hose and air cleaner assembly, and connect the negative battery cable. Finally, start the engine and check for leaks. For the left side, follow similar steps, including removing the power steering pump, belt tensioner, and bracket assembly. Replace the accessory drive belt and reinstall the power steering pump, throttle return spring, PCV valve, air cleaner, and negative battery cable.

    Q:
How do you remove and reinstall the rocker arm and Pushrod in four cylinder engine on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before we can take of the rocker arm cover off the cylinder head you will need to first loosen the rocker arm bolts on the front side of the cylinder head. In case only the pushrods are to be withdrawn, the rocker arms should be rotated in order to elevate them. When it is safe to do so take out the bolts, the rocker arms, as well as the pivot balls and keep them in separate containers with different labels so as to facilitate identification of the original position of the bolts that go back to the cylinder heads. Lift the pushrods separately, by unscrewing the rocker arm bolt and then pulling the pushrods up ; place them in a perforated cardboard box also marked 'front of engine' to avoid confusion. If the pushrod guides are to be removed then, it would be useful, to make a mark to position the component correctly. Check all the rocker arms for signs of weariness, cracks or damages especially where the rocker arm sits on the push rod and the valve stem, make sure that the hole at the end of the push rod is not blocked. Inspect the valve end of each rocker arm and force the rocker arm to either end of the damage zone and replace the rocker arm along with pivot balls. Check the shims and bushings for visible signs of wear and warpage of the pushrods: roll them along a piece of plate glass. For reassembly, coat the lower ends of the pushrods with clean engine oil or moly-base grease and position them back to their right places that is, back into the lifter socket until they seat properly. It is recommended that moly-base grease is applied on the ends of the valve stem and the upper of the push rods prior to the placement of the rocker arms coupled by the installation of the bolt. Erect the rocker arms, fit the pivot balls and bolts and sliding the moly-base grease to the pivot balls before building engine oil pressure to protect the mating area before making the specified torque.

    Q:
How to inspect and remove rocker arms and pushrods on 2.2L four cylinder engine on Chevrolet Blazer? Posted by Customer
    A:
First, remove the valve cover from the cylinder head to inspect and take out rocker arms and pushrods. It is important to make sure that a specific cylinder is at Top Dead Center (TDC) and that the lifters for this cylinder are on base circle of camshaft when removing them. To show TDC, use a plastic pen through the spark plug hole to raise piston on its highest point by rotating the crankshaft. Loosen rocker arm bolts, take off rocker arm nuts, rocker arms and pivot balls ensuring they are carefully stored in marked containers. Rotate the rocker arms aside for an easy pushrod removal. Also, don't forget about the pushrod guides if necessary remove them marking them for proper reinstallation. Look for wear, cracks, or damage especially where they contact with pushrods and valve stems on rocker arms. Inspect the rocker arm pivot area for wear, cracks or galling and make sure that each rocker arm has an open pushrod-end hole. Replace damaged or worn out rocker arms with new pivot balls as required. Lubricate lower ends of pushrods with engine oil or moly-based grease before installing them into their original locations and checking that they sit properly in lifter socket. Apply moly-based grease on valve stem ends and upper pushrod ends before positioning you're your installing bolts for aileron activator. With care, install pivot balls and bolts then tighten rocker arm nuts while no valve spring load is present on it; replace retainer bolt hand-tight before torquing down to specified amounts using a torque wrench set at 14-15 lb-ft; replace retainer bolt hand-tight before torquing down to specified amounts using a torque wrench set at 14-15 lb-ft. In later models align tab on roller rocket pivot with slot in cylinder head casting protrusion; reinstall valve cover after tightening rocker arms then check for oil leaks or valve train noises after starting the engine.

    Q:
How do you remove and reassemble the rocker arm and shaft assembly from the cylinder head in V6 engine on Chevrolet Caprice? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the rocker arm and shaft assembly from the cylinder head and place it on wood blocks on a clean surface. Pry out the nylon rocker arm retainers using slip-joint pliers, then remove the rocker arms, clean them in a suitable solution, and inspect for wear. Take out the retainer pieces from inside the rocker arm shaft. When reassembling, lubricate all parts with engine oil and assemble them on the rocker arm shaft, ensuring they are positioned in the proper sequence, as they are stamped right (R) or left (L) for correct placement. Center each rocker arm on the ¾ inch hole in the shaft and install new nylon rocker arm retainers in the holes using a ½ inch drift. Finally, place the rocker arm assembly on the cylinder head, re-install the bolts attaching the assembly, and tighten the bolts in increments to the specified torque.

    Q:
How to remove the Pushrod and Rocker Arm on 4.3L V6 engine on Chevrolet Blazer? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the valve covers, first detach them from the cylinder heads. Proceed by loosening and removing rocker arm stud nuts, starting from the front of one cylinder head. Keep these nuts in separate containers that are labeled so you can put them back correctly. On 1998 models and prior ones, in case only pushrods have to be removed, loosen each nut just enough to enable you rotate the rocker arms out of the way for pushrod removal. Instead of using pivot balls, roller-rocker arms on model year 2000 and later are retained by bolts. Put away rocker arms and pivot balls with nuts for reinstallation later on. Take out pushrods and keep them apart to avoid mix up during installation utilizing a perforated cardboard box which allows organized storage. Examine each rocker arm for wear, cracks or any other damage focusing on areas where rocker arm faces contact with pushrods and valve stems. Make sure that hole at the pushrod end of each rocker arm is open and inspect rocker arm pivot area for wear, cracks or galling. In particular, replace all worn roller rocker arms along with new pivot balls on 2000 and newer models. Check whether there are cracks or excessive wear on pushrods by rolling them on a flat surface to see if they are bent. To install, lubricate lower end of every single pushrod using clean engine oil or moly-base grease; seat in their original lifter positions; apply moly-base grease to valve stems as well as pushrod ends before placing the rocker arms over studs. Install pivot balls and nuts making sure that flat side of each nut faces pivot ball. Tighten down the rocker arm nuts properly. Reverse order reassemble remaining components; start engine then check for valve cover leaks as well as valvetrain noise (Haines). Note too that most models do not require a valve adjustment except specific instructions provided here for valve adjustment on 1994 VIN Z engines including setting the engine to TDC, aligning timing marks, and adjusting rocker arm nuts for specified valves at TDC for each cylinder.

    Q:
How to overhaul, inspect and install Rocker Arm in V6 engine on Chevrolet El Camino? Posted by Customer
    A:
Overhaul, Inspect, Install If one is using the 200 or 229 cu in V6, then the guide on the procedures that go with it is as follows, First, take out the rocker arm and shaft assembly from the cylinder head and strat laying it on wood block on a clean surface. Secondly, the nylon rocker arm retainers must be removed with a pair of channel locks. Take out the rocker arms, wash and examine them to states of wear, and take away the small retainers situated inside the rocker arm shaft. After disassembly, it is essential to lubricate all parts with engine oil and temporally assemble them on the rocker arm shaft; and to reinstall the rocker arms, it is not mandatory to reinstall them in the same place but it must be arranged in the correct manner because they are marked as right (R) or left (L). Place each rocker arm on the 3/4 in hole in the shaft and fit new nylon rocker arm retainers in the 3/4 in holes using a 'T' in drift. Last, fix the rocker arm assembly on the cylinder head and then put back the bolts with bolt tightening in a sequential manner to the torque recommended by the manufacturer.

    Q:
How to remove and reinstall Pushrod and rocker arms in 4.3L V6 and 5.0L,5.7L,7.4L V8 engine on Chevrolet Express? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the valve cover(s) from the cylinder head(s), begin at the front of one cylinder head by loosening and removing the rocker arm stud nuts or bolts, storing them in marked containers to ensure proper reinstallation. If only the pushrods are being removed, loosen each nut just enough to rotate the rocker arms aside for pushrod removal. Lift off the rocker arms and pivot balls, storing them with their respective nuts. Remove the pushrods and keep them separate, using a labeled container to avoid mix-ups. Inspect each rocker arm for wear, cracks, and damage, ensuring the pushrod end holes are clear. Check the pivot areas for wear and replace any damaged rocker arms and pivot balls, particularly on 2000 and later 4.3L V6 models, where roller bearings should also be checked. Inspect pushrods for cracks and excessive wear, rolling them across a flat surface to check for bends. Lubricate the lower ends of the pushrods with clean engine oil or moly-base grease before reinstalling them in their original locations, ensuring they seat completely in the lifters. Apply moly-base grease to the valve stems and pushrod ends before positioning the rocker arms, then set them in place and install the pivot balls and nuts/bolts finger tight, applying grease to the pivot balls to protect mating surfaces. For 2014 and earlier 4.3L V6 models, rotate the crankshaft to 60 degrees before TDC to reduce valve spring tension while tightening the rocker arm nuts/bolts to the specified torque. For 5.0L and 5.7L V8 models, rotate the engine to TDC for the number 1 cylinder on the compression stroke, tightening the rocker arm nuts until all play is removed from the pushrods, then tighten each nut an additional 3/4 turn. Adjust the intake and exhaust valves for the appropriate cylinders while the engine is at TDC. For 7.4L V8 models, rotate the engine to TDC for the number 1 cylinder and tighten the rocker arm bolts to the specified torque. For 2018 and later 4.3L V6 models, lubricate the pushrods and valve stems, install the rocker arms loosely, and tighten the rocker arms for the specified cylinders when the number one piston is at TDC. After rotating the crankshaft 360 degrees, tighten the rocker arms for the remaining cylinders. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal, and once completed, start the engine to check for valve cover leaks and valvetrain noise.
