Chevrolet K1500 Rocker Arm Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove and inspect rocker arms?
A: To begin with, the rocker arms should be removed and inspected by first removing the rocker arm covers from the Cylinder Heads and then loosening and removing the rocker arm stud nuts for reinstallation in their original positions. While removing push rods, just loosen up the nut on each side of a rocker arm enough to move it aside for removal of a push rod. With these nuts, lift off the rocker arms and pivot balls. Remove push rods in order. Pay particular attention to wear, cracks, or damage where they contact with valve stems or push rods when examining rocker arms. The open holes at the end of each push rod in every rocker arm must be checked together with wear, fractures or galling within these pivot locations. If there are any worn out or damaged rocker arms, use new ones instead and replace them alongside new pivot balls. Look for cracks, excessive wear and bending on pushrods themselves. Lubricate ends of pushrods using engine oil or moly based grease before reinstalling them back into their lifter sockets such that they fit well. Lower ends of valve stems as well as upper ends of pushrod are then lubricated using moly based grease before fitting rockers over studs. Put pivot balls on top of studs, and put nuts flat-side against the pivot balls; apply moly-based grease to pivot balls for initial lubrication until oil pressure builds up. For different engine types one should refer to specific instructions regarding valve adjustment while for general consideration after finalizing all valve adjustments reinstall the rocket arm covers start your engine check for abnormal sounds in your valve train after which you should check if there is any oil leaking through joints between your jointer tube and gasket cover.
