    Q:
How to inspect and replace the clutch pilot bearing for Chevrolet Camaro? Posted by Customer
    A:
The clutch pilot bearing, which supports the front of the transmission input shaft, is pressed into the end of the crankshaft. It is recommended to inspect the bearing whenever the clutch components are removed, and if there are any doubts about its condition, it should be replaced. The removal process involves taking out the transmission and clutch components, and inspecting the bearing for wear, roughness, lack of grease, or damage. If any of these issues are found, the bearing should be replaced. Removal can be done using a small slide-hammer and puller attachment. After removal, the bore and the area behind it in the crankshaft recess should be cleaned. For installation, a new pilot bearing should be lightly lubricated with lithium-based grease and driven into the recess with a hammer and a bearing driver or socket until it is flush with the surface of the crankshaft. Finally, the clutch components, transmission, and all other previously removed components should be installed, with all fasteners tightened securely.

    Q:
What is the purpose of the clutch pilot bearing and how should it be inspected and replaced for Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon? Posted by Customer
    A:
The clutch pilot bearing is pressed into the rear of the crankshaft. It is greased at the factory and does not require additional lubrication. Its primary purpose is to support the front of the transmission input shaft. The pilot bearing should be inspected whenever the clutch components are removed from the engine. Due to its inaccessibility, if you are in doubt as to its condition, replace it with a new one. If the engine has been removed from the vehicle, disregard the following steps that do not apply. Remove the transmission. Remove the clutch components and the flywheel. Inspect for any excessive wear, scoring, lack of grease, dryness or obvious damage. If any of these conditions are noted, the bearing should be replaced. A flashlight will be helpful to direct light into the recess. Removal can be accomplished with a slide hammer fitted with a puller attachment, which are available at most auto parts stores or equipment rental yards. To install the new bearing, lightly lubricate the outside surface with multi-purpose grease, then drive it into the recess. A socket with an outside diameter slightly smaller than that of the bearing can be used. Drive it in to a depth of 0.457-inch. Be careful not to let the bearing become cocked in the bore. Install the clutch components, transmission and all other components removed previously, tightening all fasteners properly.
