    Q:
How should you check and install piston rings before engine assembly on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
Upon preparing to fit new piston rings, the gaps should be checked on the ends; the piston ring side clearance must have already been checked. Take piston /connecting rod assemblies and new ring sets and arrange them in the form of the piston and cylinder for the end gap measurement and further engine assembling. Place the first ring in the first cylinder - it must be parallel to the cylinder wall; to do this, push the piston with the first ring near the bottom of the cylinder. For the purpose of determining the end clearance the feeler gauges are inserted between the ends of the ring until the required gauge width is attained provided the ring is square to the cylinder bore. The feeler gauge should be placed between the two rings, it should be a tight fit; then check the measurement with the specified measurement. If the gap is small, it has to be increased so that the ring ends do not come in contact with each other during the running of an engine which is dangerous. Cautiously, file off the ring ends outside the inward to make the gap wider. End gap carries no ill-effects unless the figure crosses 0.040-inch so look at the rings again if these need correction. Perform the same for the other rings in the first cylinder and the other cylinders, where rings, pistons and cylinders must be numbered. After the inspection of the ring end gaps, place the rings on the pistons, and the first one is the oil control ring, which is made up of three members. Insert the spacer/expander into groove, make sure that any anti-rotation tang has been placed into the hole drilled. Sometimes it is possible to damage the piston ring using the piston ring installation tool hence this lower side rail should be installed without using this tool then install the upper side rail in the similar manner. Following the installation of the three oil ring components, make sure that both of the side rails will rotate freely in the groove. Thereafter, place the middle ring with the stamped mark facing upwards and as earlier noted, the procedures for inserting the ring may vary depending on the manufacturer. Insert the piston ring with an installation tool it is placed into its middle groove, the identified mark should be up most of the piston. Last, place the top ring referring the position of the mark upward and one should be very careful on the difference between the rings of the middle and the top rings. Follow the aforementioned process to all the pistons and rings which are left.

    Q:
How to verifying correct ring end gaps and install new piston rings on Chevrolet C1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
Assuming the piston ring side clearance is correct, ensure that the ring end gaps are correctly set before installing the new rings. In order to facilitate measuring of the end gap and engine assembly, organize the piston/connecting rod assemblies, as well as the new ring sets to align them. Gently push down on top of the piston's top at first cylinder with number one (top) ring inside to square it with cylinder walls and make sure it is about near bottom of cylinder. Measure the end gap by inserting feeler gauges between the rings ends and compare it with specifications before adjusting accordingly. If too small, carefully file the ends of rings with a fine file to increase gap; if they are too large, ensure that you have right rings. Keep parts matched up when doing this for all cylinders as well as rings. After getting right ring end gaps, start fixing these rings onto pistons. Begin with three piece oil control ring followed by number two (middle) ring after ensuring that identification marks are arranged properly. For middle and top rings use piston ring installation tool to achieve correct alignment and repeat in all pistons and their respective rings.

    Q:
How should the piston ring end gaps be checked and corrected before installation on Chevrolet Blazer? Posted by Customer
    A:
When normal piston rings have been replaced by new ones, the ring end gaps should be checked accordingly supposing that the piston ring side clearance is standard. Stack them with motor and cylinder such that the piston cut and connective piston will also match when measuring the end gap during engine assembly as well as when the new ring sets are positioned. The top ring should be located in the first cylinder and it should be located at the bottom of the cylinder at the piston's lowest limit and it is fitted by being pushed in with the cylinder walls being square to this ring. To check the end gap, place a feeler gauge between the ends of the ring and compare with the needed size as shown in Fig. If the gap is different, check the rings before moving on to the next set of figures etc in the NASM assembly language. If it is less it has to be increased so that the ring ends do not rub against each other when the engine is functioning as it causes severe harm. When the end gap of the ring shape is correct, use a fine file to file the ring ends 'outward only' and to remove traces of the filing with a whetstone. It is not a problem if end gap is more than .040 but double check to be sure that you have the correct rings for your engine. It is necessary to repeat the operation for other rings in the first cylinder and the other cylinders using the rings, pistons, and cylinders matched together. When the measurement of the gaps of the ring end is done, fit the rings on the pistons with the Oil control ring being made up of three parts. Place the spacer expander into the groove then insert the corresponding upper side rail without employing a piston ring installation tool for damaging the rail and do the same for the lower side rail. When the oil ring components are installed, the side rails of the components must be able to rotate freely in the groove. Subsequently, fix the middle ring easily identifiable commonly by use of the piston ring installation tool, and see to it that the mark in the ring is in orients towards the top in the piston. Last, fit the top ring in the same way with the identifying mark in the upward position, and do the same for all the pistons and rings which are very sensitive; the top and the middle rings must not be interchanged.
