    Q:
What are the signs and consequences of a failure in the water pump on Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain? Posted by Customer
    A:
A failure in the water pump can lead to serious engine damage as it causes overheating. These models have a water pump that is driven by the drivebelt. Water pumps are typically equipped with weep or vent holes, which can leak coolant if there is a failure in the pump seal. To check for leaks, a flashlight and small mirror can be used to locate the hole on the water pump. If the water pump shaft bearings fail, there may be a howling sound while the pump is running, and shaft wear can be felt by rocking the water pump pulley up and down with the drivebelt removed. It is important not to mistake drivebelt slippage, which causes a squealing sound, for water pump bearing failure. Even if a pump shows no outward signs of a problem, such as noise or leakage, it may still need to be replaced. The only sure way to determine this is through removal for close examination. A quick check of water pump performance is to turn on the heater. If the pump is failing, it may not be able to efficiently circulate hot water to the heater core as it should.

    Q:
How do I remove the water pump on Chevrolet Cobalt,HHR,Saturn ION and Pontiac G5? Posted by Customer
    A:
To get rid of water pump, you must first disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Thereafter, remove the air intake duct and air filter housing. Loosen lug nuts on right front wheel , jack up vehicle , and support it securely with jack stands underneath. Take off wheel, then drain cooling system. If equipped with automatic transaxle, remove exhaust manifold . Move plug that drains coolant from bottom of water pump housing. Next, also open up your thermostat housing as well as its transfer pipe plus hoses connected to them if any are there in place. Remove the heater for the coolant together with one mounting bolt if installed . Depending on model and engine, exhaust heat shield may have to be removed along with PCV system vent tube/hose or catalytic converter. Disconnect any electrical connectors or harnesses that impede access to item being serviced Undo fasteners holding underhood fuse/relay box bracket where present . Use a hammer to tap out the water pump lightly if it becomes lodged in place Clean threads of bolts, tapped holes and sealing surfaces , removing all corrosion or old gasket material Eventually take out sealing ring from your water pump To install new water pump: put new sealing ring into it; align guide pin with sprocket at water pump sprocket hole; install water pump mounting bolts and sprocket bolts tightening them to proper torque specs; secure installation of water pump access cover, thermostat housing & pipe using appropriate torque specifications for their bolts Remaining steps are just reverse of those above Don't forget-refill cooling system & reconnect battery Finally start engine (notice a leak).

    Q:
How do you remove the water pump on Saturn LS and LS1? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the water pump on 4-Cylinder engines, first disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and drain the cooling system. Remove the drive belt, air intake duct, air filter housing, and the exhaust manifold heat shield. Drain excess coolant from the water pump housing and remove the lower radiator hose. On 2004 models, remove the thermostat housing pipe bolt from the front of the engine block and disconnect the ECT harness connector. Detach the heater hoses and remove the thermostat housing mounting bolts, then separate the thermostat housing from the engine block and water pump. Remove the water pump access cover from the engine front cover. Loosen the right front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the right front wheel and fender splash shield. Install a special holding tool onto the water pump sprocket to prevent movement and remove the water pump pulley bolts and the bolts attaching the water pump to the engine block. Clean the bolt threads and threaded holes in the engine and remove any corrosion or sealant, as well as old gasket material. For installation, install a new sealing ring into the groove in the pump and use a guide pin to align the water pump sprocket with the water pump during installation. Tighten the water pump mounting bolts and sprocket bolts to the specified torque. Install the water pump access cover and the thermostat housing and water pipe, lubricating the seal with silicone gel before installation. Complete the remaining installation steps and refill the cooling system, checking for leaks after operating the engine.

    Q:
What are the signs and consequences of a failure in the water pump for Saturn LS and LS1? Posted by Customer
    A:
A failure in the water pump can lead to serious engine damage due to overheating. If the pump seal fails, coolant will leak either from the engine front cover in four-cylinder models or from the engine timing belt cover in V6 models. It is important to use a flashlight to locate the vent hole on the water pump and check for any leaks. When the engine is off, shaft wear can be felt by rocking the water pump pulley up and down. However, it is crucial not to mistake drive belt slippage, which causes a squealing sound, for water pump bearing failure. A quick check to assess water pump performance is to turn on the heater. If the pump is failing, it may not be able to efficiently circulate hot water all the way to the heater core as it should.

    Q:
How do you remove a Water Pump on Saturn Vue? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove a 4-cylinder engine, start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal and draining the cooling system. Remove the air intake duct and air filter housing, then loosen the bolts of the right front wheel and raise the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the wheel and the right front inner wheel splash shield. Take off the front exhaust manifold heat shield and the water pump access plate from the front cover. Disconnect the electrical connector from the engine coolant temperature sensor and remove the bolts from the thermostat housing and its pipes. Twist the coolant pipe out of the water pump and move the assembly to the left. Remove the coolant pipe and its seals. Install a special holding tool on the water pump and remove the remaining water pump sprocket bolts. Take out the two bolts from the front and rear of the water pump and gently tap it with a soft face hammer if it's stuck. Clean the bolt threads, threaded holes, and sealing surfaces, and remove the sealing ring from the water pump if reusing it. To install the new water pump, put a new sealing ring onto the groove of the pump and use a guide pin to align the water pump sprocket with the water pump. Install the water pump mounting bolts and tighten them, then remove the sprocket holding tool and guide pin. Tighten the water pump mounting bolts and sprocket bolts to the specified torque. The rest of the installation is the reverse of removal, making sure to lightly lubricate the new water pipe seals. For a V6 model, remove the timing belt cover and inspect the belt. On 2004 and later models, remove the timing belt, tensioner, and adjuster assembly. Clean all sealing surfaces of the pump and housing. To install the new pump, compare it to the old one to ensure they are identical. Apply a thin layer of RTV to hold the new gasket in place and mate the pump to the block. Install the pump bolts and tighten them to the specified torque. Finally, refill the cooling system, run the engine, and check for any leaks.
