Saturn LS Water Pump

The Water Pump is used in Saturn LS vehicles to circulate coolant taken from the radiator and passed over the top of the engine to receive and release heat produced during combustion. It is common to find he LS vehicles featuring a belt driven water pump with an impeller that pumps the coolant through the passages of the engine. The old type of water pump was of cast iron while the new pumps are generally of aluminum casting but much more efficient. Signs that show that water pump is about to fail are therefore leaks on the coolant, noises originating from the bearings, and increase in the temperature of the engine. High Performance water pumps for high performance engines, crankshafts and bearings include water pump impellers and internal passages for higher coolant flow and lower parasitic power loss. Other special purpose coolants include electric water pumps as well which more efficient and offers better control of water cooling in case a project is small and requires intricate spacing.

Each OEM Saturn LS Water Pump we offer is competitively priced and comes with the assurance of the manufacturer's warranty for the part. Furthermore, we guarantee the speedy delivery of your orders right to your doorstep. Our hassle-free return policy is also in place for your peace of mind.

Saturn LS Water Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove the water pump on Saturn LS and LS1?
A: To remove the water pump on 4-Cylinder engines, first disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and drain the cooling system. Remove the drive belt, air intake duct, air filter housing, and the exhaust manifold heat shield. Drain excess coolant from the water pump housing and remove the lower radiator hose. On 2004 models, remove the thermostat housing pipe bolt from the front of the engine block and disconnect the ECT harness connector. Detach the heater hoses and remove the thermostat housing mounting bolts, then separate the thermostat housing from the engine block and water pump. Remove the water pump access cover from the engine front cover. Loosen the right front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the right front wheel and fender splash shield. Install a special holding tool onto the water pump sprocket to prevent movement and remove the water pump pulley bolts and the bolts attaching the water pump to the engine block. Clean the bolt threads and threaded holes in the engine and remove any corrosion or sealant, as well as old gasket material. For installation, install a new sealing ring into the groove in the pump and use a guide pin to align the water pump sprocket with the water pump during installation. Tighten the water pump mounting bolts and sprocket bolts to the specified torque. Install the water pump access cover and the thermostat housing and water pipe, lubricating the seal with silicone gel before installation. Complete the remaining installation steps and refill the cooling system, checking for leaks after operating the engine.
  • Q: What are the signs and consequences of a failure in the water pump for Saturn LS and LS1?
A: A failure in the water pump can lead to serious engine damage due to overheating. If the pump seal fails, coolant will leak either from the engine front cover in four-cylinder models or from the engine timing belt cover in V6 models. It is important to use a flashlight to locate the vent hole on the water pump and check for any leaks. When the engine is off, shaft wear can be felt by rocking the water pump pulley up and down. However, it is crucial not to mistake drive belt slippage, which causes a squealing sound, for water pump bearing failure. A quick check to assess water pump performance is to turn on the heater. If the pump is failing, it may not be able to efficiently circulate hot water all the way to the Heater Core as it should.
