This procedure applies only to 2.0/2.2 liter four-cylinder and V6 engines. Moly-base grease or engine assembly lube should be used to lubricate the camshaft bearing journals and cam lobes; in addition, ensure that the bearing journals as well as the lobes have been prelubed before installing the camshaft. When putting the camshaft into the engine, support it near the block, making sure not to scrape or nick the bearings while doing so. The thrust plate is installed and bolts tightened on four-cylinder engines. Camshaft, lifters, timing chain and sprockets installation is finally done.

Reassemble the engine components in the reverse order, paying attention to specific steps and precautions.

Remove the oil pan and flywheel, then drive out the expansion plug from the rear cam bearing, followed by the front bearing toward the rear and the rear bearing toward the front using a camshaft bearing remover set.

Confirm that the number 1 piston is at top dead center using a dial indicator.

A dial gauge is used to measure lobe lift and run-out.

To remove the camshaft, the following steps are involved:Remove the timing chain and sprockets.Remove lifters and pushrods.Remove the oil pump drive.

Special tools are necessary for this procedure.

Since this procedure requires air conditioning disconnection, take the car to a dealer or specialist for A/C de-pressurization.

Remove the grille, intake manifold, rocker arm covers, rocker arm and shaft assemblies, fuel pump, and distributor, while plugging the fuel lines to prevent drainage.

Mount a dial indicator with the stem resting on the end of the exhaust valve pushrod, ensuring the plunger is in line with the pushrod.

Install the camshaft thrust plate mounting screws and tighten them to the specified torque.

1. Remove the camshaft thrust plate screws/bolts by rotating the camshaft until the access holes in the timing gear align with them. 2. Extract the camshaft and timing gear through the front of the block, taking care to avoid damaging the camshaft bearings. 3. If the timing gear needs to be removed from the camshaft, it must be pressed off using a hydraulic press or taken to an automotive machine shop.

Use a micrometer to measure the lobe height and base circle, calculating the lobe lift by subtracting the base circle measurement from the lobe height.

Remove the oil/air separator as an assembly with the hoses attached, and set aside the fuel rail from the cylinder head.

Always wear eye protection.

New bearings are installed using the same tool set, ensuring to align the cam bearing oil holes according to the manufacturer's instructions supplied with the installation/removal tool.

Finally, the remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal, and be sure to check cam timing after reassembly and before starting the engine.

Install a new camshaft as well.

Carefully draw the camshaft out of the engine block, ensuring to support it with one hand near the engine block to avoid damaging the camshaft bearings as the lobes pass over the bearing surfaces.

Install the camshaft gear that drives the balance shaft, aligning it with the keyway and matching the marks on both balance shaft gears by turning the balance shaft.
