To remove the engine, first drain the oil and remove it from the car. You should mount the engine on a work stand with the oil pan facing up. The next steps involve removing the front cover, timing chain and gears, oil pan, and oil pump. For identification purposes, stamp the cylinder number on connecting rod bolt bosses and caps. You have to protect crank journals by installing rubber hose over there before removing connecting rod caps. Finally, mark all main bearing caps to remember how they were on installation. Slowly lift out the crankshaft after removing all main bearing caps. If necessary, replace both upper and lower halves of these crankshaft main bearings that should be cleaned carefully at first. Examine clearance by using Plastigage® along with replacing bearings if required. Before installing them in place, install crankshaft together with bearings while cap bolts must be torqued per specifications. At last, measure end play of this shaft then fix a rear main bearing seal on its place.

Never attempt to correct excessive running clearance by filing the caps; instead, fit new shell bearings after checking the crankshaft journals and crank pins for ovality and confirming their diameters are standard or regrind sizes.

The two halves of the rear main bearing oil seal should be removed.

Retorque all bearing cap bolts to the specified values.

The primary considerations include the condition of the cylinder block, cost, access to competent machine shop facilities, parts availability, time constraints, and the mechanic's experience.

Torque all main bearing cap attaching bolts to the proper specification, except for the rear bearing cap, which should be torqued to about 10 to 12 ft-lb initially.

It is important to check that each of the five main bearing caps is marked for its location in the engine block. If they are not marked, small indentations should be made similarly to the connecting rods and caps to ensure the main bearing caps are reinstalled in their original positions.

Use a micrometer to test each journal and crankpin at several different points for ovality.

The upper half should be positioned on its cylinder block seat and the lower half on the rear main bearing cap, with the lips facing the front of the engine. If there are two lips, install the one with the helix towards the front.

Next, lift the crankshaft from the engine block, taking care not to damage it.
