Remove the crankshaft pulley (and hub, if equipped). Remove the oil pan. Remove the drivebelt tensioner and the timing cover-to-block bolts, then detach the cover. Use a scraper and degreaser to remove all old gasket material from the sealing surfaces of the timing cover, engine block, and oil pan. If necessary, carefully pry out the front oil seal from the cover with a large screwdriver. Do not distort the cover. Install the new seal with the spring side toward the inside of the cover. Drive the seal into place using a seal installation tool or a large socket and hammer. A block of wood will also work. Use a thin coat of ATV-type sealant to position a new gasket on the timing cover. Place the cover in position over the dowel pins on the block. Install the bolts that secure the cover to the block, then tighten all of them. Follow a criss-cross pattern to avoid distorting the cover. Install the oil pan. Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.

After loosening the water pump pulley bolts, you should remove the serpentine drivebelt and then remove the water pump pulley.

Apply engine oil to bolt threads and loosely install two bolts to hold the cover, then install the dowel pins with the chamfered end first, followed by the water pump with a new gasket.

Start by removing the spark plug wire cover for the front cover only. For models from 1996 and later, take out the ignition coils and the coil mounting bracket to reach the rear cover.

Install the harmonic balancer, bolt, and washer, using a screwdriver or similar tool to lock the flex plate or flywheel starter teeth, then torque-tighten the harmonic balancer bolt to specifications.

Clean all gasket material and sealant from the cover and engine block with care, ensuring not to damage the aluminum surface.

Slip off the timing chain and sprocket assembly, ensuring to replace them as a set and align the key during installation.

Remove the timing chain cover-to-engine block bolts, noting that some require T-40 and T-50 Torx bits. Separate the cover from the engine, tapping it gently with a soft-face hammer if it is stuck.

Remove the timing chain housing-to-block lower fasteners and the lowest cover retaining stud from the timing chain housing.

Reinstall the oil pan and complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.

Use a gasket scraper to eliminate all traces of old gasket material and sealant from the cover and engine block, taking care not to damage the aluminum cover.
