    Q:
What is the function and maintenance of the driveshaft and Universal Joint on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
The driveshaft in the model is a tube running from the transmission to the rear end of the car and containing universal joints at both ends so that it can deliver power to the rear wheels regardless of the angles. It has a split yoke in the front, which engages into the extension housing of the transmission so that it can move back and forth as required during its use. An oil seal seals the compartment additionally and acts as a barrier to prevent the leakage of the fluid as well as the entry of contaminants into the transmission. Engine drive shaft does not require much maintenance as the joints are of type universal joints and are lubricated for life and are considered for replacement only if certain problems surface compelling the removal of the whole assembly from the car. The balance of the driveshaft must be preserved, and so it has to not be covered with undercoating or mud and has to be checked for damage as well as the proper attachment of the balancing weights each time it is to be removed. Problems associated with the driveshaft are generally heralded by noises or vibration feel while the car is in motion, which can be establish through a road test to pinpoint if the root cause is the driveshaft or another part. Forcing an engine speed during the test also navigates to the root of the problem, and if the noise, or the vibration, is reduced when the transmission is in different gears, the driveshaft may not be the problem. Regarding checking for worn universal joints the first symptom is a clunking noise heard while coasting, say from a stop sign and accelerating to proceed; the second is abnormal driveline noise while coasting in Neutral. Furthermore, if the vehicle is jacked and the driveshaft is rotated while examining the universal joints for end play is another method of determining the wear level.

    Q:
What is a driveshaft and Universal Joint and how do you inspect it on Chevrolet Avalanche? Posted by Customer
    A:
A driveshaft is a tube or pair of tubes that transmits power between the transmission and differential, with universal joints located at either end and in the center of two-piece driveshafts. Single piece driveshafts have a splined yoke at the front that allows for movement during vehicle operation, while two-piece driveshafts have a slip joint on the front of the rear section and a center support bearing. The driveshaft assembly requires little service, with universal joints lubricated for life and replaced if problems arise. Inspection involves checking for dents, cracks, and oil leakage, as well as ensuring proper operation of universal joints and center bearings. Driveshaft mounting bolts should also be checked for tightness, and similar checks should be performed on the front driveshaft and driveaxles of 4WD models. Noise or vibration while driving may indicate problems with the driveshaft or other components.

    Q:
What is a driveshaft and universal joints and its function on Chevrolet C1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
A drive shaft is a tube or set of tubes that transfers power between either the transmission or the transfer case on 4WD models and the differential. Universal joints are positioned at each end of the driveshaft as well as in the center of two-piece driveshafts. On 2WD models, their driveshafts have a front splined yoke that slips into the transmission extension housing so that their length can increase and decrease. An oil seal prevents leakage at this point. Driveshafts on 4WD models tend to come with a splined yoke / companion flange at the transfer case end while two-piece driveshafts typically sport a slip joint at the front of the rear section. Center bearings carry the driveline when two-piece driveshafts are used. It's not often you need to service a drive shaft assembly but if anything goes wrong, replace worn universal joints since they have had to be greased for life. The drivshaft must be cleaned and checked for damage whenever lifting vehciles during servicing, ensuring that small weights used in balancing it do not detach. In most instances, noise or vibration when driving signifies trouble in the drivshaft whereas road testing can clarify whether this is right.

    Q:
How to replace a universal joint on Chevrolet Avalanche? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove a universal joint, it will vary depending on whether it is an outer snap-ring type or an injected plastic type. The snap rings are then removed with pliers, and force out the bearing caps. The U-joint is then removed and replaced with a new one and the bearing cap bores are inspected. For the injected plastic type, the snap-rings are removed if the joint has been rebuilt. Reassembly is the same as for the outer snap-ring joint, except the snap-rings are on the inner part of each bearing cap. If the joint is stiff after assembly, the yoke ears can be struck with a hammer to free up the joint.

    Q:
Should you always purchase a universal joint service kit before beginning this procedure on Chevrolet Express? Posted by Customer
    A:
Always purchase a universal joint service kit for your model vehicle before beginning this procedure and read through the entire process beforehand. Start by removing the driveshaft and placing it on a workbench equipped with a vise. Use a small pair of pliers to remove the snap-rings from the ends of the universal joint yokes. Support the cross on a short piece of pipe or a large socket and use another socket to press it out by closing the vise. Press the cross through as far as possible, then grip the bearing cup with locking pliers to remove it. A universal joint repair kit will contain a new trunnion, seals, bearings, cups, and snaprings. Inspect the bearing cup housing in the driveshaft for wear and damage; if the housings are so worn that the cups fit loosely, the driveshaft must be replaced. Position the trunnion so the cavities face it, then press one bearing cup into the yoke approximately 1/4-inch using a vise. Use multi-purpose grease to hold the needle rollers in place in the cup, insert the trunnion into the partially installed bearing cup without dislodging the needle rollers, and stick the needle bearings into the opposite cup. Hold the trunnion in correct alignment and press both cups into place by slowly closing the jaws of the vise, using a socket slightly smaller in diameter than the cups to press them into the yoke. Press in one side, install the snap-ring, then press the other side to shift the trunnion assembly tight against the installed snap-ring and install the other snap-ring. Repeat these operations for the remaining two bearing cups. If this is the first time the joint is being rebuilt, it will not be necessary to remove the snap-rings, as the pressing operation will shear the molded plastic retaining material. If the driveshaft has previously had the original U-joints replaced with snap-ring types, remove the snap-rings before pressing the bearing cups out. Press out the bearing cups, remove the trunnion, and clean all plastic material from the yoke, using a small punch to remove the plastic from the injection holes. Reassembly follows the same process as for the outer snap-ring joint, except that the snap-rings are on the inner part of each bearing cup.

    Q:
How Do You Inspect, Maintain, and Troubleshoot a Driveshaft and Universal Joint on Chevrolet Trailblazer? Posted by Customer
    A:
A driveshaft is a tube that transmits power between the transmission or transfer case on 4WD models and the differential, there are universal joints at the two rear ends of the rear driveshaft, and at the front part of the front driveshaft. The front of the driveshaft is provided with a splined yoke to be fitted into the extension housing of the transmission or the transfer case and any change in length due to movements of the suspension during the operation of the car is taken care by the forward and aft movement of this yoke which needs to slide along the length of the containing housing and the rear end is sealed with an oil seal to avoid any leakage of the fluid used in the case The driveshaft assembly virtually has no service interval, as the universal joints are lubricated for the life of the shaft and joint; however, if there is a problem, the shaft has to be removed from the vehicle. The driveshaft should not be covered with undercoating or mud, and should be cleaned and checked for damage when the vehicle is being serviced, while the small weights used for balancing should be checked for integrity and security; during reinstallation the proper position should be maintained for balance. The driveshaft problems generate a noise or vibration during operation, and as a result, require a road test to differentiate with other driveline problems that lead to inspection of the driveshaft. To examine, lift the rear of the car and put it on two jackstands, turn the wheels in the front to lock them. It pays to visually try to check on the driveshaft for any dents or cracks - either of these found then the driveshaft has to be replaced. At the two ends, a shaft should be checked for leakage internally where it merges with the transmission or the transfer case shows a damaged seal while leakage at the differential part shows a pinion seal damage. Having an assistant supporting a rear wheel, run the rear wheel turning a while and insure the universal joints move without binding, noise or looseness or in attempting to twist the joint between your fingers and thumb after clamping the splined ends together. Furthermore, make sure that all the mounting bolts of the driveshaft are properly torqued. For 4 WD models the following checks should be made in addition: On the front driveshaft check if there is leakage around the sleeve yoke, this is a sign of yoke seal failure, also check around the area where the driveshafts connect to the transfer case and the front differential, leakage here indicates worn oil seals. Also, freed the front drive axle joint and look at rubber boots and both ends of each axle for leakage of oil or grease; if there is leakage around the axle flanges it means that the axleshaft oil seal is bad while leakage at the CV joint boots indicate a bad rubber boot.
