Saturn Ion Wheel Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace driveaxle oil seals in Automatic transaxle for Chevrolet Cobalt,HHR,Pontiac G5 and Saturn ION?
A: Wheel leaks frequently occur due to wear of the wheel seals. Replacement of these seals is relatively easy since the repairs can be performed without removing the transaxle from the vehicle. The wheel seals are located on the sides of the transaxle, where the driveaxles are attached. If leakage at the seal is suspected, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. If the seal is leaking, fluid will be found on the sides of the transaxle. To remove the left-side seal, remove the snap-ring on the stub shaft and use a screwdriver or seal removal tool to carefully pry the wheel seal out of the transaxle bore. Measure the distance that the stub axle protrudes beyond the sleeve and remove the sleeve from the stub shaft using a special puller. Compare the old seal to the new one to ensure it's the correct one. For installation, coat the new seal with transmission fluid and use a seal installation tool to drive it into the bore. Use a special tool to press the new sleeve onto the stub shaft and install a new snap-ring on the stub shaft before installing the driveaxle.
  • Q: How to replace driveaxle oil seals in Manual transaxle for Chevrolet Cobalt,HHR and Saturn ION?
A: At times, there occur lubricant leaks due to wear of the wheel seals which is easy to replace because repairs can be performed without removing the transaxle from the vehicle. These seals are positioned on both sides of the transaxle where the inner Constant Velocity (CV) joints are splined into the differential. If leakage at the seal is suspected, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. If there is a leak in the seal, fluid will be present on that side of the transaxle. Remove drive axles. In case you're replacing the right side Wheel Seal, remove the intermediate shaft too. Using a suitable prybar or screwdriver, carefully pry the oil seal out of the transaxle bore. A special oil seal removal tool (available at auto parts stores) may be necessary if this fails using a screwdriver or prybar. Use a large deep socket as a drift or a seal driver to install the new oil seal. It must be driven squarely into the bore until it seats flush with the transaxle case. Apply multi-purpose grease to the lip of the new seal before installing it onto the drive axle assembly. The lip of the new seal should not be damaged during its installation process though being cautious about that is crucial. Check the level of lubricant in the transmission; add as needed.
