Chevrolet Nova Ignition Switch

Chevrolet Nova ignition switch is an important part of ignition and charging system which controls the starting of engine and electrical parts such as radio and power window etc. The engine of the car is started by simply inserting a key, pressing a button or using a remote to turn the ignition switch whereby the vehicle's computer instructs the solenoid and ignition to activate the starter. In the years that Chevrolet Nova models have been manufactured, there have been various types of ignition switch, and most of them are operated via a mechanical key. Contemporary models can have a button which has to be pressed to start the engine, though it still needs a transponder signal for the purpose. Despite this, there are changes in the technology used in the car, which brings different ways of ignition, still, the Ignition Switch is still relevant in the Chevrolet Nova.

Chevrolet Nova Ignition Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How is the ignition switch positioned and removed on Chevrolet Nova?
A: For anti-hijacking, the ignition switch is located aside the steering column and operated by a linkage of a rod activated by the lock cylinder which is relatively remote from the steering column. On 1970 to 76 models the ignition switch was switchable without removing the steering wheel or column, just loosen the column. The switch should be set before removal to the LOCK position which, by inserting a screwdriver in the actuating rod slot and setting the switch slide to the right till the stop is felt before moving it half a detent downwards. The switch is to be put back in a way that places it in the 'LOCK' position when being reinstalled, and only original, or at most, fully identical screws are to be used to secure the part, as thicker or longer screws might hinder the folding function of a collapsible steering column. For models from 1977 and later, the switch has to be in the 'OFF-UNLOCKED' position before the switch is removed. If you are already at the stage of removing the lock cylinder, the switch actuating rod should be pulled up until a stop is achieved and s then pressed down the second. In addition before installation it is important for switch to be set to the 'OFF-UNLOCK' position and the gearshift lever to be in neutral. The switch slide should be shifted two position to the right from 'ACCESSORY' to 'OFF/UNLOCK,' thereafter the actuator rod can be inserted into the slide hole and secured to the steering column using two screws where only the lower one is tightened to 35 in-lb.
