For models from 1978 and earlier, the lock cylinder should be removed in the RUN position for 1976 and earlier models or in the LOCK position for 1977 and 1978 models to avoid damaging the warning buzzer switch. Begin by removing the steering wheel and
Turn Signal Switch, ensuring the turn signal switch is pushed back enough to slip over the end of the shaft without pulling the harness out of the column. Use a thin bladed screwdriver to break the housing flash loose while depressing the spring latch at the lower end of the Ignition Lock Cylinder, then withdraw the Ignition Lock Cylinder. To install the new Ignition Lock Cylinder/sleeve assembly, hold the sleeve and rotate the lock clockwise against the stop, aligning the key on the cylinder sleeve with the housing keyway. Insert a 0.070-inch diameter drill between the lock bezel and the housing, rotate the cylinder counterclockwise while maintaining pressure until the drive section mates with the sector, then press in the Ignition Lock Cylinder until the snap ring engages in the grooves. After removing the drill, check the lock action and reinstall the turn signal switch and steering wheel. For 1979 models, the Ignition Lock Cylinder should be removed only in the RUN position. Remove the steering wheel and turn signal switch, pulling the switch up and over the end of the steering shaft without pulling the wiring harness out. Remove the ignition key warning switch, then use a magnetized screwdriver to remove the lock retaining screw, being careful not to let it drop into the column. Pull the Ignition Lock Cylinder out of the side of the steering column, rotate the Ignition Lock Cylinder set, and align the cylinder key with the keyway in the steering column housing. Push the lock all the way in and install the retaining screw, then reinstall the remaining components.
