How to Troubleshoot and Replace a Thermostat?

Before assuming the thermostat is to blame for a cooling system problem, check the coolant level, drive belt tension, and temperature gauge operation. To remove the thermostat, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and drain the cooling system. Then, disconnect the air filter outlet duct and remove the PCV vent pipe or detach the throttle body coolant hose. To install the new thermostat, insert a new gasket into the groove in the housing, reconnect the hose, and install the thermostat housing and bolts. Finally, refill the cooling system, reconnect the battery, and let it reach normal operating temperature.
