Chevrolet Cruze Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How do you remove the shift knob and disconnect the shift cables on Chevrolet Cruze?
A: To remove the shift knob, use a small screwdriver or trim tool to disengage the shift boot retainers at the front edge, slide the boot forward to disengage the rear retainers, and lift the boot up. Depress the two tabs below the retaining ring on the shift lever while lifting the ring until it is freed. Once loose, depress and lift the reverse lock-out tab at the base of the shifter until disengaged, then remove the shift knob, reverse lockout unit, and boot as an assembly from the shift lever. Separate the shift knob from the reverse lock-out unit by lifting the retaining tab. For the shift cables, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the floor center console side trim panels and shifter bezel, and lift the shifter boot. Disconnect the rear air outlet duct from the instrument panel, lift the cable-retaining clips at the rear of the shifter assembly, and release the cable ends. Remove the battery and battery tray, then the driver's side knee bolster. Mark each cable end for connection, pop the shift cable ends from the transaxle shift arm, and pull the cables through the firewall grommet. For cable adjustment, lift the cable retaining clips without disconnecting them, release the internal cable, and insert a 5 mm Allen wrench or drill bit through the hole in the shift lever to lock it in place. At the transaxle end, press the block in while pushing the select lever backwards, then secure each cable by snapping the locking tabs down at the rear of the shifter. Remove the Allen wrench or drill bit, push the select lever backwards slightly while pulling the block out, and check for proper shifting of the transaxle. The remaining installation follows the reverse of the removal process.
