A: In order to keep from shorting the battery with a tool used to loosen cable clamps, it is important to disconnect the cables in reverse order; the negative first and positive last. This is important even when only changing the positive terminal cable; always start by removing the negative cable from battery. First you should disconnect old wires from battery, then follow each one of them to their other ends and unplug it. Remember well how each wire is located before detaching it so as to get a correct installation later on. Take them away with you when buying new ones if there are any old cables that you would like replaced. It must be done with parts which are exactly same for replacements of these leads. Use a wire brush to clean off rust and corrosion from the threads of the solenoid or ground connection part. After that, apply some petroleum jelly or a little amount of battery terminal corrosion inhibitor on these points so that they will not corrode next time. Screw down the mounting bolt/nut on top of this end and connect the cable either to solenoid or ground securely. Without pulling it tight, make sure that a new cable reaches the battery post before attaching it to batteries again. Connect the earth strap to its mate on this particular point first and then attach a new lead to its counterpart at '+'.
