Chevrolet C1500 Distributor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove the distributor for Chevrolet C1500 and K1500?
A: To remove the distributor, begin by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal, and remove the air intake duct and resonator assembly from the throttle body. Position the engine with the number one cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke, and then disconnect the electrical connector and coil wire from the distributor cap, labeling and detaching the spark plug wires. Ensure the distributor rotor is pointing at the alignment mark and mark the position of the distributor base to the engine before loosening the distributor hold-down clamp. Remove the distributor by taking out the hold-down bolt and O-ring. For installation, if the crankshaft has moved, reposition the number one piston at TDC by feeling for compression pressure at the spark plug hole and aligning the crankshaft damper mark with the TDC mark on the timing indicator. Install a new O-ring on the distributor housing, and position the rotor as instructed for the specific model year. Insert the distributor into the engine block, allowing the gears to mesh properly, and align the rotor with the mark when fully seated. Be cautious to install the distributor correctly to avoid engine issues and diagnostic trouble codes. Finally, tighten the distributor hold-down clamp, and complete the remaining steps in reverse order of removal.
