The collapsible steering column should not be forces or dropped, hammered or leaned on as this will put the major parts at risk of distortion. Starting with this, locate the negative terminal and detach the battery cable from it and then unbolster the clamp bolt from the steering coupling which is placed near to the steering column shaft lower end of the car usually beneath the hood. Second, disconnect the shift linkage from the shift tube lever at the lower end of the column and last, remove the steering with the puller. Continue by the pull out the left sound insulator and the lower column cover, then the trim cap or the lower trim panel of the instrument if there is depending on the equipment. Loosen the steering column cover and toe pan screws and the shift indicator needle is to be pulled out of the shift bowl. As part of the procedures this column has to be supported safely and the two nuts holding it in position at the lower side of the instrument panel have to be detached. Slowly bring the column down maintaining the position of the used spacers, disconnect the wires and finally, withdraw the column from inside the automobile. For installation, reinstall the column into the vehicle but make sure that the upper and lower dash covers would glide on the column. If the bracket mounting the column to the dash was removed, install the bolts in the specified order: left rear part, left front part, right front part and the right rear part of the column and it is tightened just to the desirable state that does not affect the column. At this stage, the switch harness should be installed to the
Ignition Switch before positioning the column body and supporting the fully connected column; the lockwashers and nuts to the coupling must then be tightened before the nuts that secure the mounting bracket of the column to the lower side of the instrument panel are to be loosely assembled. Place lower cover to the firewall, align in by putting the left lower screw, install and tighten the right lower screw, left lower screw and at last put in the two screws from the top of the cover and tighten. First screw tightly the missing head for the left side of the cover clamp, then the right side, the rest of the cover screws are then fastened and tightened. Finally fasten the nuts that hold the column to the under side of the dash then re-fit the
Steering Wheel and tighten the bolt over the steering coupling clamp.
