How to disassemble and test generator components for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
    A:
Due to the critical nature of disassembling and testing alternator components, it may be advisable to replace a faulty unit with a new or factory-rebuilt model. If an overhaul is chosen, ensure replacement parts are available before proceeding. Begin by removing the alternator and pulley. Secure the alternator in a vise and remove the four through-bolts to separate the slip ring end frame and stator assembly from the drive end and rotor assembly. Remove the stator from the end frame and continue dismantling by removing the rectifier bridge, BAT terminal screw, capacitor lead, brush holder, and regulator. Remove the capacitor and renew the slip ring end frame bearing if necessary. Unscrew the pulley retaining nut and remove the washer, pulley, fan, and spacer. Remove the rotor and spacers from the drive end frame and renew the drive end frame bearing if needed. Clean all components and inspect for wear or damage. Replace any worn or damaged parts. Clean the slip rings and check the brushes for wear. Reassemble the alternator, ensuring correct positioning of insulating washers and sleeves. Clean the brush contact surfaces and hold the brushes up in their holders. Finally, align the marks on the slip ring and drive end frame.

    Q:
How do you remove a generator for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the alternator, start by disconnecting both leads from the battery terminals. Then, mark and disconnect the leads from the rear face of the alternator. Next, loosen the alternator mounting and adjuster link bolts and push the unit in towards the engine. Slip off the drive belts and remove the upper mounting bracket. Lift the alternator from the engine compartment, making sure to disconnect the fuel bowl vent line if necessary. To install the alternator, simply reverse the removal process and adjust the drive belt tension. If purchasing a new unit, remember that pulleys are not usually included, so the old one should be removed by holding the alternator shaft still with an Allen wrench while unscrewing the pulley nut.
