    Q:
How to remove, install, and adjust the shift cable? Posted by Customer
    A:
Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels. Shift the transmission into Neutral. Remove the transfer case shield. Pry the cable end from the transmission control lever stud and remove the cable from the transmission oil pan clip. Remove the horseshoe retainer from the shift cable and squeeze the cable retainer to disconnect the cable. Remove the steering column trim filler panel. Pry the shift cable from the shift lever and squeeze the cable retainer to disconnect the cable from the steering column bracket. Remove the cowl trim panel, door sill trim plate, and seat. Remove the cable from the floor clip and grommet. Lift up the driver's side of the carpet and remove the grommet and cable from the vehicle. Installation: Installation is the reverse of removal, but be sure not to handle the rubber boot as it will be damaged, leading to future cable failure. Adjustment: Apply the parking brake. Remove the retaining clip from the transmission rear support bracket. Separate the body-core adjuster from the range selector pin. Place the transmission shift selector shaft into the Neutral position. Place the transmission shift lever on the steering column into the Neutral position. Remove the horseshoe retainer from the shift cable and remove the cable from the transmission oil pan clip. Install the cable back onto the transmission oil pan clip and install the horseshoe retainer onto the shift cable. Make sure the transmission shift lever on the steering column and the shift selector shaft are still in the Neutral position. Reposition if necessary. Place, then snap, the body-core adjustment onto the transmission selector shaft. Ensure the spring loaded body-core adjustment moves freely. Push the locking tab into the body-core until it snaps. If necessary, wiggle the body-core while pushing in the locking tab. Insert the horseshoe retainer into the shift cable. Check the adjustment. The shift lever must go into all positions and the engine must start only in the P or N positions only. If necessary, readjust the shift cable and the park/neutral switch until your adjustment meets both these criteria.

    Q:
How do you remove the shift cable for the 1997 Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the shift cable, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Raise the vehicle and secure it on jackstands. Under the vehicle, pry the cable end from the transmission control lever stud and remove the cable from the clip on the transmission oil pan. Remove the cable clips securing the cable to the body and the metal U-clip from the shift cable housing. Compress the locking tabs and pull the cable out of the bracket. Push the cable grommet out of the floorpan. Inside the vehicle, remove the driver's side knee bolster and lower steering column cover. Pry the cable end from the shift lever at the steering column and remove the metal U-clip from the cable housing at the bracket on the steering column. Working under the vehicle, remove the shift cable.
