Q: How to replace the throttle valve (TV) cable on these transmissions?
A: The throttle cable used on these transmissions should not be thought of as a "downshift" cable. The throttle cable controls line pressure, shift feel, shift points, detent downshifts and part throttle downshifts. The function of the cable is similar to the combined functions of a detent cable and a vacuum modulator. To replace it, first remove the air cleaner. Then, detach the cable terminal (end) from the throttle lever by pulling it forward, off the mounting lug. Compress the locking tangs on the cable housing and detach the housing from the bracket by pinching the locking tangs of the throttle cable housing with a pair of pliers and pushing the housing through the bracket. Remove the routing clips or straps. Trace the cable to the transmission and remove the bolt and the flat washer. Pull up on the cable cover at the transmission until the cable is visible, then disconnect the cable from the transmission link. Remove the seal. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the bolt securely. When you're finished reattaching the throttle cable assembly, adjust it. With the engine off, depress and hold down the metal re-adjust tab at the engine end of the throttle cable. Move the slider until it stops against the fitting. Release the re-adjust tab. Rotate the throttle lever to its full travel position. The slider must move (ratchet) toward the lever when the lever is rotated to its full travel position. Make sure the cable moves freely. The cable may appear to function properly with the engine stopped and cold. Recheck it after the engine is hot. Finally, road test the vehicle.
Q: How do you disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle lever?
A: Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Caution: On models equipped with the Theftlock audio system, be sure the lockout feature is turned off before performing any procedure which requires disconnecting the battery. Access the throttle body by removing the air filter assembly from the TBI unit on TBI systems, or by removing the air intake duct and resonator from the throttle body on Central SFI and MPFI systems. Detach the cruise control cable from the throttle lever, if equipped. Rotate the throttle lever and separate the throttle cable end from the throttle lever by passing the cable through the slot in the throttle lever. Depress the locking tabs on the cable housing and push the cable housing through the bracket, then detach the cable from the cable routing retainers. Remove the trim panel from under the dash and detach the cable from the accelerator pedal by pulling the accelerator cable retainer out of the pedal and sliding the cable through the slot. Depress the locking tabs on the cable housing and push the cable through the firewall and into the engine compartment. Finally, remove the cable from the engine compartment. Installation is the reverse of removal.
