Q:
What is the purpose of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system and PCV Valve for Cadillac DeVille and DTS? Posted by Customer
A:
A PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system helps to reduce hydrocarbon emissions by passing fresh air through the crankcase, which picks up blow-by gases and then pulls them via the PCV valve into the throttle body or intake manifold where they are burned by the engine. The PCV system comprises of two hoses and a PCV valve that controls the flow of gases in relation to engine speed and manifold vacuum. On some newer models, an upper intake manifold is located over a "dirty air" tube that carries blow-by gases from the crankcase, through the PCV valve and into the throttle body. One hose brings in cool ambient air from outside through an air intake duct while another takes crankcase gases out of crankcase, through the PCV valve and into a throttle body. The PCSV system can be inspected for proper operation easily. Keep checking your PCV system, as carbon black and gunk deposited by blow-by gases will eventually clog up the "dirty" side system hose and inside of throttle body behind throttle plate as well as its valve. Common symptoms for a blocked or stuck PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve include rough idle, stalling or slow idle speed, oil leaks, oil in air cleaner or sludge in engine. Q:
What is the purpose of a Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system and PCV Valve for Cadillac ElDorado and Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
A:
Instead of venting them to the atmosphere, a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system is used to consume crankcase vapors in the combustion process. In gasoline engines, small amounts of combustion gas pass by the piston rings and get into the crankcase. Such crankcase blow-by gases have unwanted air pollutants, which are hydrocarbons. The PCV system is used to keep these vapors from getting away into the atmosphere while still allowing for adequate ventilation of the crankcase that ensures good oil quality. It should be checked every time you change oil and serviced every 48,000 kilometers (30,000 miles). For it can be damaged, never run an engine without a PCV valve or a ventilation system. Beginning with locating PCV valve usually found either in valve cover or intake manifold and then disconnecting the crank case ventilation tube from the positive crank case ventilation valve followed by removing the PCV valve from its grommet, install PCV valve by having it inserted into grommet with connecting ventilation tube to PCV valve.

Q:
How do I check and replace the PCV valve in my Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma? Posted by Customer
A:
If the engine runs at normal operating temperature, while idling, withdraw the valve (with attached hose) from the rubber grommet on the valve cover. In a V6 engine, PCV valve takes place in a valve cover. Take it out and see if there is any suction and shake it to check for rattles. Put your finger over the tip of the valve. If there is no vacuum at the valve, test a clogged hose, manifold port or valve itself. Replace any plugged or deteriorated hoses. Shut off engine and shake PCV valve; listen for rattle. If it does not rattle, get a new one to replace that which exists currently but doesn't make noise when shaken, and pull it out of end of hose so that you can take note its installed position as well as direction before replacing it again with an identical one To fit a replacement PCV vale, remove it from the end of hose and remember how it has been placed consequently you may have problems with finding appropriate vehicle model year, size for such an item purchased only after comparing previous characteristics with new ones Check for damage on rubber grommet and if need be install a new one. Lastly push another pcv valve and hose into their respective slots inside the valve cover securely.

Q:
What should you do if you don't feel any vacuum when checking the PCV valve for the 1999 Chevrolet C1500? Posted by Customer
A:
If you don't feel any vacuum, this could indicate a clogged hose, manifold port, or the valve itself. In this case, any plugged or deteriorated hoses should be replaced.

Q:
What is the purpose of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system and PCV Valve on Chevrolet Express? Posted by Customer
A:
To reduce hydrocarbon emissions, the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system scavenges crankcase vapors rich in unburned hydrocarbons. Rather than using intake manifold vacuum for this purpose, as it happens in the conventional PCV systems; however, the system in these vehicles does not. It is done by connecting a fresh air inlet hose from the air intake duct or resonator box straight to valve cover, which allows pressure equalization by fresh air. There is another hose that draws in crankcase vapors by connecting the left valve cover to the intake manifold. Based on intake vacuum levels, PCV valve controls vapor flow into intake manifold. The engine model determines how a particular PCV system is configured. When servicing an engine, the hoses of its PCV system should be checked for any damage or clogs as well as leaks. Rough idling, stalling, high or low idle speeds, oil leaks and sludge buildup may all occur due to blocked or leaking hoses. Vacuum presence in the PCV hose can be tested very simply checking vacuum gauge readings at different stages of running and diagnosing such problems as leaks blockages or excessive crankcase pressure which influence PCV system work.

Q:
How do you replace the PCV valve for the 1992 Chevrolet K1500? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the PCV valve, pull the valve out of the end of the hose, remembering how it was positioned. When buying a new PCV valve, ensure it's the correct one for your vehicle and engine size by comparing it to the old valve. Once you have the new valve, push it into the end of the hose until it's seated. Check the rubber grommet for any damage and replace it if necessary. Finally, push the PCV valve and hose back into their original position.

Q:
Where is the PCV valve located and how do you check and replace it for Chevrolet Avalanche,Silverado,Suburban,Tahoe and GMC Sierra,Yukon,Yukon Denali,Yukon XL? Posted by Customer
A:
The PCV valve is located in the left valve cover. Pull the valve (with hose attached) from the rubber grommet in the cover while engine idle normal operating temperature. Put your finger over the valve opening. Check for a plugged hose, manifold port, or the valve itself if there's no vacuum at the valve. Replace any plugged or deteriorated hoses. Turn off the engine and shake it to check for rattling sounds from PCV valve. Replace it with a new one if it does not rattle. To replace pull out the one end of hose and note its seated position. When purchasing a replacement PCV valve, make sure it's for your particular vehicle and engine size. Compare the old valve with the new one to make sure they're the same. Push until seated into hole in end of hose . Inspect grommet for damage and hardening; replace as needed. Push securely into place pcv valve and line.
