At specified intervals, the air filter should be replaced with a new one, and a thorough preventive maintenance schedule requires inspecting the filter between changes. Unscrew the wing nuts and lift up the air filter cover; for later models, unscrew the two wing nuts and withdraw the air filter. While the filter housing cover is off, take care not to drop anything into the air duct or housing. Wipe out the inside of the air filter housing with a clean rag, then place a new air filter in the housing, ensuring it seats properly at the bottom. Finally, install the cover and retaining nuts, connecting the clips securely, and for later models, ensure the tabs on the filter cover engage with the slots in the housing.

Both air and PCV filters need regular replacement and inspection. The air filter is in the air cleaner housing on the engine. To access it, unscrew the top plate's wing nut and lift the plate. Disconnect any vacuum hoses. Remove the air filter for inspection and replace it if light doesn't pass through. Clean the housing before reinstallation. The PCV filter is usually in the air cleaner. Remove the top plate, disconnect the PCV hose, and remove the filter holder. Replace the filter and reconnect the hose.

For 6.2L and 7.0L models, first remove the air filter housing, then take out the air filter retainer fasteners, and remove the retainer and filter from the air cleaner housing. Note that on 6.2L models, the filter and retainer are one piece and must be replaced together.

When replacing the air filter, especially when the filter housing cover is off, be careful not to drop anything down into the throttle body or air cleaner assembly. It's essential to maintain a clean and debris-free environment during the replacement process.
