    Q:
How should spark plug wires be checked and maintained for proper engine operation on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
The spark plug wires should be examined at appropriate interval and also whenever there is replacement of spark plugs in the engine. It is crucial for the functioning of the engine that the wires are not mixed, so examine the wires as each is different. When removing the plug wire from a spark plug, take the rubber end by holding it by the screw, twist it a little and pull it off, do not pull on the wire. Ensure within the boot for corrosion; corrosion has the appearance of a white crusty powder and push the wire and boot in place over the spark plug but only lightly. If it is not, then pull out the wire and with the use of pliers, he needs to squeeze the actual metal connector that is within the boot until it can finally slide. Wash the surface area of the wire by sweeping it with a clean piece of cloth and then examine it for such things as holes, burnt surface, cracks and other imperfections which are occasioned by over bending of the wire; a factor that results into the breaking of the conductor within the wire. Remove the wire from the spark plug distributor cap perhaps with a detachment of a retaining ring upward, and just again pull the rubber insulator. Be sure there is no sign of corrosion and that the fit is snug, as with the spark plug end; then check the spark plug wire's resistance with an ohmmeter and reconnect it to the distributor cap. The last check is done for the remaining spark plug wires and this is done by making sure that they fit tightly at the distributor end and also at the spark plug side. If new spark plug wires are called for, always get the ones that fit your engine model which normally comes pre-spliced with rubber-go-throughs. Disconnect wires one at a time so that there will be confusion when reconnecting in the correct firing order, and ensure to take note of the routing of each wire before disconnecting it.

    Q:
How to maintain spark plug wires and inspect the distributor cap and rotor on Chevrolet Blazer? Posted by Customer
    A:
Cylinder engines that have a distributor-less ignition system, whereby the ignition coils are connected directly to the spark plug wires. While in V6 engine case, there is a distributor that is located at the back of the block. The spark plug wires need regular inspection usually on the recommended intervals and also every time new plugs are fitted. It is important to look at one wire at a time when inspecting them so as not mix their order, this is crucial in proper working of an engine. To disconnect the plug wire from the spark plug, grab the rubber boot, twist slightly, and pull the wire off. Avoid pulling on the wire itself, only on the rubber boot. Inside the boot, check for corrosion, which appears as a white crusty powder. Push it back onto the spark plug ensuring it is tight enough. If it does not stay put crimp with pliers until it fits securely again removing if necessary from metal connector inside lug armor then replacing once again with secure fit. Get a clean rag and wipe along it from top to bottom to remove any dirt or grease from its entire length. While cleaning examine for burns or cracks; however do not bend or stretch it too far since the conductor could break easily therefore tampering with efficiency as well as function of engine operation. For four-cylinder engines just pull on rubber boot when detaching wire from coil pack.Remove wire from distributor located at rear of engine for V6 engines.Check for corrosion and tightness before replacing as needed either in coil pack or distributor.Proceed to check other individual spark plug wires one after another making sure they are properly connected into place either on igniton coil or distributor and to plug.If you need new spark plug wires buy ones that match your vehicle's make and model so you don't end up swapping firing order by mistake. To inspect cap remove retainer screws.Loose contacts worn out burned carbon tracks cracks are some of things that may be found inside it.Remove retainer screws and pull rotor off distributor shaft to look for cracks and carbon tracks. If you find any damage or defects, replace the cap and rotor. It is recommended that a new cap and rotor should be installed when new spark plug wires are being replaced. In this case, remove the wires from the old cap one at a time and place them on the new one in the same place so that there can't be any mix-ups of their firing order.
