Further, time belt and crankshaft drive gear must be dismantled. Note: Don't let oil get on the rubber part of the seal or on the part of the crankshaft pulley that touches the seal. The seal must be installed dry. Check the surface on the pulley hub that the seal rides on. If the surface has been grooved from long-time contact with the seal, the pulley should be replaced with a new one. Lubricate only the inside of the pulley hub with clean engine oil and install the crankshaft pulley. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

For installation, coat the lip of the new seal with clean engine oil and drive it into the bore with a seal driver or a socket slightly smaller in diameter than the seal, ensuring the open side of the seal faces into the engine. Lubricate the sealing surface of the hub with clean engine oil, then install the crankshaft pulley/damper using a special installation tool, avoiding the use of a hammer. Install a new center bolt and tighten it to the specified torque, ensuring a new pulley bolt is used. Install the special alignment tool (EN47839) on the rear of the crankshaft, attaching it with the two supplied screws. Install the new oil seal housing over the alignment tool and studs onto the rear of the engine block. Remove the guide studs but leave the alignment tool in place.

Tighten the upper bolts finger-tight. Most new rear main oil seals and housing assemblies come with a seal protector on the inside running face of the oil seal, which should remain in place until the housing is positioned.

Support the cover on two blocks of wood and drive the seal out from the backside using a hammer and punch, being cautious not to scratch or distort the area where the seal fits to avoid leaks.

Use a screwdriver or hook tool to carefully pry out the seal, taking care not to damage the cylinder block and main bearing bore or the nose and sealing surface of the crankshaft. Alternatively, you can drill a small hole on each side of the seal and insert self-tapping screws to pull the seal out without prying.

Ideally, a seal installation tool should be used.

Carefully pry the oil seal out of the cover with a seal puller or a large screwdriver, ensuring not to damage the crankshaft in the process.

Next, remove the transmission, followed by the flywheel/driveplate and the oil pan.

Drive the seal into place with a large socket and a hammer, or a piece of pipe if a large socket isn't available, ensuring the seal enters the bore squarely.

Remove the transaxle and the driveplate.

Install the two dowels into the oil seal housing bolt holes, then apply a 1/8-inch wide bead of RTV sealant around the sealing area of the oil seal housing, passing on the inside of the bolt holes.

If marked, ensure that the words "THIS SIDE OUT" on the seal face out, toward the rear of the engine.

Carefully pry the old oil seal out of the timing chain cover using a seal puller or a large screwdriver, taking care not to damage the crankshaft or distort the cover.

Lubricate only the inside of the pulley hub with clean engine oil before installing the crankshaft pulley.

The driveplate and oil pan need to be removed.

Apply clean engine oil or multi-purpose grease to the outer edge of the new seal and install it in the cover with the lip facing inward. Use a seal driver or a large socket and hammer to drive it into place, ensuring it enters squarely and is at the correct depth.

If you don't have a seal removal tool, thread a self-tapping screw partially into the seal, then use pliers as a lever to pull it from the engine.

The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal.

Do not remove the protector sleeve or use any lubricant on the new seal.

Check the pulley hub surface for grooves caused by long-term contact with the seal; if damaged, replace the pulley.

Remove the alignment tool.

The crankshaft and seal bore should be cleaned thoroughly and degreased by wiping them with a rag soaked in lacquer thinner or acetone.

The manufacturer recommends removing the oil pan and using special studs EN 46109, seal alignment tool EN 47839, and handle J 42183 to ensure correct alignment of the seal.

Install the new seal over the end of the crankshaft, ensuring the lips point toward the engine, and carefully tap it into place.

Install the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and tighten it to the specified torque, completing the installation in reverse order of removal.

After disconnecting the battery, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the splash shield from below the engine compartment.
