    Q:
How is the replacement of tie rods typically done with the rack and pinion in the Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
    A:
To make the image more clear, for photographic clarity, we did the job with the rack and pinion removed. We will proceed by lifting up the front of a car and supporting it on jack stands then take off the front wheel. Following that, take away tie rod nut that holds outer tie rod to steering knuckle. Separate tie rod from steering knuckle using GM special tool or equivalent. It is important to know where the jam nut sits in relation to inner tie rod threads so that when it is reinstalled similar front end alignment can be maintained as previously. Thereafter, unscrew outer tie rod from inner one and back off jam nut from the outer tie rod. When you tighten up ends of threads together against jam nut marking at its position on threads using a C-clamp and a 1 1/8-in (27 mm) socket put back again into steering knuckle. Put in place, properly install the retaining nut for tie-rod specifications tightening then repeat process for torqueing jam nut specs. Position a tire on the front wheel before bringing down vehicle down to earth level surface. In conclusion, now a front end alignment must be performed.
