    Q:
How do I remove the alternator? Posted by Customer
    A:
The alternator can be removed by first detaching the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. In models with a Theftlock audio system, ensure that the lockout feature is turned off. Unplug the electrical connectors from the alternator. Depending on the type, tightening of belts or loosening adjustment and pivots or rotating drivebelt tensioner should be done in order to remove the drivebelt. If equipped, remove the alternator support brackets, then take away its mounting bolts. For 3.4L V6 engine other steps are required. Air cleaner and duct assembly are removed; cable is separately taken off from the negative battery terminal, coolant recovery tank is taken out, drivebelt is removed, wheel lug nuts and right-side driveaxle/hub nut are loosened and front of vehicle is raised on jackstands. Also, right inner fender splash shield should be removed together with wheels and under-vehicle splash shield at last. The front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter have to come out first followed by right driveaxle and driveaxle shield. Besides unpluging electrical connector from knock sensor you may want to remove steering gear heat shield also if present take off cooling duct for alternator as well as Alternator rear brace bolt & nut, unscrew nut to detach power steering line from alternator upper mounting stud or separate electrical connector & battery terminal from rear of alternator or unscrew lower mounting bolt for an alternator or unscrew upper mounting bolt/stud thereby removing an alternator. In case of installation on replacing an alternator one should make sure that new/rebuilt unit matches terminals and identification numbers with those of old one; also it may be necessary to exchange pulley between old unit and new/rebuilt one for example when replacing an alternator check if terminals/identification numbers match with those on old unit; however sometimes it will be necessary to change pulley from old unit to new/rebuilt one. When finished, adjust the drive belt tension and test the charging voltage. Always detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery when carrying out any work on the starting system. Avoid excessive cranking of starter motor as this exposes it to overheating due to continuous use. The starter is connected directly to a battery where inappropriate handling can lead to arcing or fire incidents.
