    Q:
How do you remove the steering gear? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the rack and pinion, start by loosening the front wheel lug nuts and raising the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Remove both front wheels and drain the power steering fluid from the reservoir. Disconnect the stabilizer links and tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles. Move the boot covering the rack and pinion input shaft and remove the coupler pinch-bolt to detach the coupler. Support the rear part of the subframe with a floor jack and remove the two rear subframe mounting bolts. Lower the subframe carefully, ensuring the rack and pinion separates without binding and detaching any wiring harnesses or hoses if necessary. Place a drain pan under the rack and pinion and disconnect the power steering pressure and return lines. Cap all openings to prevent fluid loss and contamination. Remove the rack and pinion mounting fasteners and guide the rack and pinion through the left wheel opening to remove it from the vehicle. For installation, reverse the removal steps, ensuring proper torque specifications for fasteners, guiding the rack and pinion input shaft into the intermediate shaft coupler, and reattaching any wire harnesses or brackets that were removed. Fill the power steering pump with recommended fluid, bleed the system, and check for leaks and proper operation. Finally, install the wheels, lower the vehicle, tighten the lug nuts, and have the front-end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
