    Q:
How do you remove and install an HEI coil in cap distributor? Posted by Customer
    A:
On HEI coil in cap models, begin by disconnecting the ignition switch/battery feed wire (BAT) and the tachometer lead (TACH) from the distributor cap. Release the coil connectors from the cap using your hands and avoid the use of a screwdriver or other tools. Next, turn the distributor cap locking latches counterclockwise, remove the cap, and move it out of the way. Disconnect the four-terminal ECM wiring harness connector from the distributor. If necessary for clearance, release the wiring harness latches and remove the wiring harness retainer, noting the spark plug wire numbers indicated on the retainer. Proceed by removing the distributor hold down clamp bolt and the hold down clamp. Mark the position of the rotor on the outside of the distributor body, then slowly lift the distributor from the engine and note again the position of the rotor when it stops turning. Mark this position as well. Avoid turning the crankshaft with the distributor removed as this will alter the ignition timing. To reinstall the distributor if the crankshaft was not turned after removal, position the rotor in the exact location it was in when the distributor was removed, lower the distributor into the engine, turning the rotor slightly if needed to mesh the gears at the bottom of the distributor. With the base of the distributor all the way down against the engine block, the rotor should point to the first alignment mark. Place the hold down clamp in position and loosely install the hold down bolt. Connect the ignition feed wire and tachometer wire to the distributor. Install the distributor cap and, if it was removed, the secondary wiring harness. Reconnect the coil connector, tighten the hold down bolt with the distributor in its original position, and check the ignition timing. If the crankshaft was turned after distributor removal, remove the number 1 spark plug and place your finger over the spark plug hole while turning the crankshaft with a wrench until you feel compression and the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the O on the engine timing indicator. Position the rotor to point between the appropriate spark plug terminals based on your engine type, and then complete the installation.
