    Q:
How to replace a compressor in an air conditioning system? Posted by Customer
    A:
If the compressor is being replaced due to failure, the desiccant bag inside the condenser must be replaced and the rest of the system should be flushed by a technician to remove particles or contaminants. Have the air conditioning system discharged by an automotive air conditioning technician. Note: If you are going to install a new compressor, inform the shop doing the work to record the amount of refrigerant oil recovered when the system is discharged. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the lower splash shield and inner fender splash shield. Remove the drivebelt(s). Disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor clutch field coil. Remove the compressor inlet and outlet line mounting bolts and remove the lines from the compressor. Remove and discard the old 0-rings. Remove the compressor mounting bolts/nut and remove the compressor. If a new compressor is being installed, follow the directions that came with the compressor regarding the draining of excess oil prior to installation. The clutch may have to be transferred from the original to the new compressor. Balance the compressor oil. Before reconnecting the inlet and outlet lines to the compressor, replace all 0-rings and lubricate them with refrigerant oil. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal. With the old compressor removed, remove the compressor drain plug and allow the oil to drain into a graduated container. Tilt the compressor over to allow both ports to drain into the same container. Once all the oil is drained from the compressor, record the amount that you measured and add the total to any amount measured when the system was evacuated. A new compressor has 2.5 oz (75 ml) of oil in it. If the total amount of oil drained is less than 2.5 oz (75 ml), no balancing is required. Install the compressor and have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by the shop that discharged it. If the total amount of oil drained is more than 2.5 oz (75 ml), oil will have to be added. To balance the system, subtract 2.5 oz (75 ml) from the amount of drained oil and add the difference to the new compressor. Install the compressor and have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
