    Q:
How to disconnect the negative battery cable and adjust the shift cable on 1981 and later Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
    A:
To disconnect the negative battery cable, shift the transaxle into 1st gear. Then, raise the front of the car and support it on jackstands. Working under the car, loosen the shift cable attaching nuts at the transaxle levers. Move to the interior of the car and remove the console trim plate, sliding the shifter boot up the shifter. Install a yoke clip between the tower and carrier at the base of the shifter, and insert a 5/32 inch or number 22 drill bit into the alignment hole at the side of the shifter assembly. Rotate the transaxle lever and tighten the attaching nut to remove slack from the cable. Tighten the attaching nut on the transaxle, then remove the drill bit and clip from the shifter assembly. Reinstall the shifter boot and console trim plate, and reconnect the negative battery cable. After adjustment, lower the car to the ground and road test, checking for a good neutral gate feel during shifting. If necessary, finer adjustments can be made after road testing.
