Q:
How to replace CV joints or boots? Posted by Customer
A:
Before you start replacing CV joints or boots, you should consider all available options and determine the cost and availability of parts. For inner CV joint, remove the driveaxle and secure it in a vise using wood-lined jaws. Inspect CV joints for excessive radial play and ensure smooth operation throughout their range. Once a torn boot is found, you have to disassemble the joint, clean the components and check for lubrication loss or contamination. The remaining good CV joint should be greased using CV joint grease then a new boot will be installed. To disassemble, cut and discard the boot clamps, at which point the removing of the boot follows while retaining rollers on spider trunnion. Remove the spider assembly snap-ring, indicate tri-pot for proper reassembly, then use brass drift and hammer to remove spider assembly. Clean all parts following this procedure inspecting them for wear; any worn part of the inner CV joint means an entire driveaxle assembly has to be replaced. While putting it back together, cover axleshaft splines with tape, slide shaft down through clamps and CV Boot; then face chamfer side of tri-pot spider towards shaft with gentle taps into place after greasing it up. After ensuring proper boot positioning and pressure equalization attach new clamps. Begin by cutting and discarding boot clamps as outlined above for outer CV joint. When fixing this problem, one can use a soft-faced hammer to knock off a cv joint from an axle shaft after removing bear retainer clip using snap ring pliers. Take off the boot gently then clean all components completely without missing any part at all. Also look at these items prior to changing them if they appear bad so swap out failing ones and put new ones in its place where necessary. Re-assemble by sliding a new sealing boot clamp and CV Boot onto axleshaft, adding a new bearing retainer clip, packing cv joint with grease, aligning the splines and gently driving on cv joint to axleshaft. Re-installation requires proper boot seating and pressure equalization are put into place before reinstalling the driveaxle.
