    Q:
How should the heads of the valves be examined and what steps should be taken if pitting or burning is present on Buick Skylark? Posted by Customer
    A:
Heads of the valves should also be inspected for pitting and burning especially on the exhaust valves and also the valve seatings. If pitting is small, it can be rectified by rubbing the seats and valves together by coarse and then fine grinding paste. To grind the valves, one should put some carborundum paste on the seat face and using a suction grinder on the valve head, that should be rotated in semi-rotary mode and the valve lifted occasionally to spread the paste. Once a flat and impending casting luster is attained to both surfaces, wash off the paste and reinforce the procedure using fine carborundum paste and turn and lift the valve accordingly. It can be made easier with a light spring under the valve head. Grinding is said to be completed when a uniform non-directional smooth light grey matte surface is achieved. If there is severe pitting or burning, the valve must be taken to a dealer and the seat recut; if the refacing leads to a reduction of valve head margin width beyond the limits that are set, the valve will have to be replaced. Last of all, scrapped all carbon from the valve head and stem, cleaned the ports and valve guides of any grindings and cleaned the valves and seats with a damp rag followed by a dry rag and ended with an air line if available to ensure the parts are sightly clear.

    Q:
Is servicing valves, valve seats, and valve guides best handled by a professional on Pontiac Fiero? Posted by Customer
    A:
This is especially so because the job involves the valves, valve seats, and valve guides; and because the tools and equipment used need specialized attention. An individual who is at home can uninstall remove and dismantle each head, initiate cleaning and assessment, reassemble and transport the head(s) to a dealer service department or an automotive machine shop for actual valve working. The service department or machine shop will dismantle the valves and springs with possibility of reconditioning or replacing the valves and valve seats, recondition the valve guides, check and replace the valve springs, spring retainers and keepers if necessary, replace the valve seals with new ones, put the valves and spring back together so that the installed valve spring height is as required. also the cylinder head gasket surface to be refinished in case it is warped. As soon as the valve job is done the head becomes as good as new; but before the head is put back on, it must be cleaned again to remove any metal chips as well as abrasive grit work may have left while doing the valve service or the resurfacing of the head as the case may be, using compressed air if at all available to blow out all oil holes and passages.
