To begin, remove the steering wheel. Next, take off the column-to-instrument panel trim panel and the cover plate, noting that early models have the cover plate secured by three screws while later models can be pried off. Depress the lockplate using a 'U' shaped tool and the steering wheel retaining nut to extract the snap-ring from the shaft groove, then remove the lockplate. Slide off the directional signal canceling cam, preload spring, and thrust washer from the steering shaft. Unscrew and remove the turn signal lever, then depress and unscrew the hazard warning knob. Pull out the switch connector from the bracket on the jacket and tape the wire ends to prevent snagging during removal. Remove the wire protector by pulling downwards on the tab. For tilt columns, position the directional signal and shifter housing to the low position and remove the harness cover, taking care not to damage the wires. Unscrew the three switch mounting screws and pull the turn signal switch straight up, guiding the wiring harness through the opening in the steering column housing. Reinstallation involves reversing the removal steps, ensuring the switch is in neutral and the hazard warning knob is fully pulled out.

To disconnect the battery ground cable, start by pulling off the switch electrical connector. Next, remove the three switch mounting screws and lift the switch rearwards out of the instrument panel. To reinstall, simply follow the reverse of the removal procedure.

Connect the connector and test the switch operation.
