    Various engine sensors and components have checking procedures,the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor that changes resistance with temperature, and a failure in the circuit can cause trouble codes. The resistance should be measured when cold and warm while ensuring reference voltage from PCM is around 5.0 volts for the verification. Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor monitors changes in intake manifold pressure then varies its voltage output accordingly. Look at the reference voltage and signal voltage with the ignition on and engine off, and observe voltage changes as the engine's vacuum changes. Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor acts as a thermistor where you can measure its resistance at different temperatures to make sure it changes as expected. Also, use a scan tool to monitor the IAT sensor for performance. The oxygen sensor in exhaust detects oxygen content which you can check its millivolt signal while warming up your engine. Check whether the oxygen sensor heater has correct voltage or not. Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) provides speed data to PCM which can be checked for reference voltage. Depending on the type of engine, Camshaft Sensor and Crankshaft Sensor should be checked for resistance and proper signal output. Finally, Knock Sensors detect engine knock which should be checked for reference voltage and resistance. If any component fails these checks, replacement may be necessary.

    Take the cable away from the negative battery terminal. This sensor is found on the air intake duct for 4.3L V6 and 5.0L, 5.7L, and 7.4L V8 engines as indicated below. Take off the Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor's electrical connector. In case of a vehicle with a 4.3L V8 or a 5.0L, 5.7L, or 7.4L V8 engine, you should just disconnect the electrical connector and pull it out of its mounting hole in the intake duct by holding firmly onto it. Grasp it firmly and carefully remove the Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor from the air intake duct of your vehicle with firmness and care to avoid any damage that might be caused to either the sensor or the air intake duct itself when removing it out of there by pulling gently but forcefully against resistance or twisting one way then another before lifting up off its mount point near where the other wires are attached nearby; you can also use pliers if necessary but make sure not to break anything while doing so! The Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor is removed by holding it tightly and pulling out of an air intake duct. All cracks, tears, and deteriorations are inspected around an Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor mounting hole in an air intake duct. Replace the intake duct if there is any damage on the mounting hole. Installation is done in reverse order as compared to removal operations: for example, what was removed first should now be installed last while what was installed last becomes the first part that should be removed prior to the installation process beginning all over again at each step along the way until everything has been put into the correct place exactly where needed which would require following the proper sequence according to the plan provided here within these instructions given previously such as referring back through one page only instead of going through the whole book all at once without any reference points whatsoever except those mentioned above concerning the order followed during the disassembly stage according to the schedule prepared from the original manufacturer's manual, etc. This is true for 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L V8 engines wherein the Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor is one of the parts of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.

    The Intake Manifold Temperature (IMT) sensor is a thermistor, a resistor that changes its resistance value with temperature. The voltage signal from the sensor to the PCM will be directly affected by this change in the resistance values. Resistance values decrease as the sensor temperature increases. The resistance values, however, increase as the sensor temperature goes down. It should be noted that only 1996 through 2000 models are equipped with an IMT sensor. This test sets a diagnostic trouble code and illuminates the Service Engine Soon light. Clearing the diagnostic trouble code after performing tests is mandatory together with making necessary repairs. One can find the Intake Manifold Temperature (IMT) sensor installed either in the air intake duct near the air cleaner or in it. Check that there are no loose terminals in the connector and breakages on wires leading to the sensor first of all. Make repairs where necessary. Before checking intake manifold temperature sensor, check PCM voltage supply and ground circuits. Disconnect electrical connector from IMT Sensor and connect positive lead of voltmeter to tan wire terminal and negative lead to black wire terminal at harness connector. Turn ignition switch ON- voltage reading should be approximately 5.0 volts. If voltage is not correct; check wiring between sensor and PCM. If circuits are good, then have PCM checked at dealer service department or other properly equipped repair facility. Disconnect electrical connector from IMT sensor with ignition switch OFF. With an ohmmeter measure resistance between two Intake Manifold Temperature sensor terminals on sensor while completely cold (50 to 80-degrees F). Reconnect electrical connector to sensor start engine and warm up until operating temperature is reached (180 to 200-degrees F), disconnect connector again, measure resistance. Compare your measurements against resistance chart for this vehicle. Should there be incorrect results of this test, replace intake manifold temperature sensor. A more accurate check may be performed by removing air intake duct and heating the sensor, with a heat gun or hair dryer while you monitor the resistance of the sensor. Disconnect electrical connector from sensor. Carefully remove sensor from air intake duct or air cleaner assembly. Installation is reverse of removal.
