Install the main bearings in the cylinder block and main bearing caps, lubricating the bearing surfaces with engine assembly lube.

Install the new seal with the helical lip toward the rear of the engine, driving it into place with a special tool or an appropriately sized socket, or a flat block of wood if there is enough room.

Loosen the other crankshaft main bearings to allow the crankshaft to drop about 1/8 inch (0.062mm). Remove the old upper half of the seal and lubricate the new seal with oil (for 1975-84 vehicles) or chassis grease (for 1985-87 vehicles). Use a soft copper wire to pull the new seal into place around the crankshaft, ensuring it protrudes equally on each side. Remove excess seal if necessary. Check the bearings, torque the bearing cap bolts to specifications, replace the oil pan, and run the engine slowly during the first few minutes of operation to break in the new seal.

Position the narrow end of the installation tool between the crankshaft and the seal seat to protect the new seal from damage, then raise the new upper half of the seal into position with the seal lips facing the front of the engine.

Place a drop of sealant on each end of these seal pieces and pack them into the upper groove to fill the gap made previously. Trim the remaining material perfectly flush with the block, being careful not to harm the bearing surface.

To replace the front seal, start by removing the vibration damper.

Install the flywheel to facilitate engine rotation during reassembly.

The two halves of the rear main bearing oil seal must be removed, followed by the removal of the main bearings from both the cylinder block and the main bearing caps, keeping them separated according to their positions.

Replacing the seal is much easier with the engine removed, but it can also be done with the engine in place.

Using a punch, drive out the old oil seal and shedder by pushing from the front toward the rear of the timing chain cover.
