    Q:
What is the importance of driveaxle boots and how should they be maintained on Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain? Posted by Customer
    A:
The CV boots are essential in preventing dirt, water, and other foreign materials from entering and damaging the constant velocity (CV) joints. Since oil and grease tend to wear out the material of the boot, it should be washed using soap and water. The outer CV boot wears out earlier than the inner one because it is constantly moving back-and-forth with the steering action of the front hub; hence, there is a need for regular inspection. Additionally, one should also inspect them for cuts, cracks, or clamps that may have become loose. This includes checking both inner and outer CV boots for leaking lubricant, or any signs of worn clamps such as cracks present in them. There is no difference between them and all-wheel-drive models that have driveaxles at their rear ends as well. Replacements are needed if they have any signs of cracking or if there is any leaked lubricant.

    Q:
How to replace CV joint boots for Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before starting the job, it is important to explore all options if the CV joint boots need to be replaced. Complete rebuilt driveaxles are available on an exchange basis, which can save time and effort. Before one starts disassembling the vehicle it is necessary to find out the cost of parts and availability. To protect axleshaft, the drive axle should be placed in a vise lined with rags when replacing the inner CV joint boot. Excessive play and smooth operation should be checked on the CV joint. The joint needs disassembly, cleaning and inspection for damage in case its boot is torn. The process demands one to remove boot retaining clamps, slide housing and bushing off spider assembly, as well as removing spider assembly from axleshaft. Then slide stop ring off axleshaft, clean old grease out of housing and spider assembly. Each bearing was removed with care before being cleaned up and inspected too. Applying CV joint grease onto inner bearing surfaces then slided bearing over them should follow this step. Reinstall the boot, stop ring, Spider Bearing, Spider Retaining Ring and Spider Assembly respectively. It is recommended that grease should be packed into the housing while seating boot in housing and axial seal grooves. The proper length for CV joint shall be adjusted by fitting boot clamps on it tightly enough. When replacing outer CV Boot first cut off the clamp retaining boot on it then slide back Boot itself; then spread apart ends of internal snap-ring from C.V joint so that C.V joint may slide off shaft at last.Inner race must be pressed down for removing ball bearings where balls are later pried out of cage These races will tilt as well as rotate thereby removing them from outer race . All parts must be cleaned up properly before checking whether there is any damaged part among them or not.The Assembly should be reinstalled by lowering it into housing rotating it and pressing balls into cage windows A new snap-ring is installed and grease applied through the splined hole. It should be positioned on driveaxle and driven onto it with a soft-face hammer using CV joint assembly. The boot should be seated and the retaining clamp should be installed. Finally, to tighten the boot clamps.

    Q:
How to remove and replace the inner and outer CV joint and boot of a driveaxle for Chevrolet Equinox,GMC Terrain and Pontiac Torrent? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove and replace the inner CV joint and boot of a drive axle, start by removing the drive axle from the vehicle and mounting it in a vise lined with wood or rags. Use a center punch to mark the tri-pod and axle shaft for proper reassembly. Remove the stop-ring from the axle shaft and discard it. Clean the old grease from the outer race and tri-pod bearing assembly, inspecting for abnormal wear. To reassemble, slide the clamps and boot onto the axle shaft, install a new stop-ring, place the tri-pod on the shaft, and install a new bearing retainer clip. Apply CV joint grease, slide the boot into place, equalize the pressure, tighten the clamps, and install the drive axle assembly. Remove and discard the bearing retainer clip and slide the boot off the axle shaft. Clean all components and inspect for wear. To reassemble, slide a new sealing boot clamp and boot onto the axle shaft, place a new bearing retainer clip, add grease to the outer CV joint assembly housing and sealing boot, align the splines, and drive the CV joint onto the axle shaft.
