    Q:
How to remove the brake pad? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the caliper on all models except CTS-V with GM designation J56, start by removing the cap from the brake fluid reservoir. Then, loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle and secure it on jackstands. Remove the wheels and inspect the brake disc. If machining is needed, remove the disc and the pads. Before disassembling the brake, wash it with brake system cleaner and let it dry. Position a drain pan under the brake to catch any residue. Do not use compressed air to blow off the brake dust. Use two wrenches to hold the guide pins while loosening the caliper mounting bolts. Remove the upper caliper mounting bolt and allow the caliper to rotate down on the mounting bracket. Remove the inner and outer brake pads, as well as the brake pad support plates from the caliper bracket. Secure the caliper to the suspension with a length of wire and remove the remaining caliper bolt. Remove the two caliper guide pins, clean them, apply high-temperature grease, and reinstall them in the caliper bracket. For installation, clean the support plates, lubricate the wear points with high-temp brake grease, and reinstall the caliper mounting bracket. Place the pads in the caliper mounting bracket and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the specified torque. For CTS-V with GM designation J56 calipers, follow the same steps until step 5. Instead of removing the caliper pistons, remove the brake pad support plates and secure the caliper to the suspension with wire. For installation, clean the caliper guide pins, apply high-temp grease, and reinstall them in the caliper bracket. Clean the support plates, lubricate the wear points with brake grease, and reinstall them on the caliper mounting bracket. Place the pads in the caliper mounting bracket, applying copper-based brake paste on the edges of the pad's metal back plate. Install the caliper and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the specified torque. After completing the job, depress the brake pedal a few times to bring the new pads into contact with the disc. Check the brake fluid level and add if necessary. Finally, carefully test the brakes before putting the vehicle back into normal service.
