To remove the engine, first disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system, disconnecting the radiator hoses, heater hose, and small by-pass hose for Olds engines. Next, remove the top radiator support, fan shroud, and radiator, followed by all belts, the fan and fan pulley, crankshaft drive pulley, and torsional damper. If a Chevrolet engine is present, remove the water pump. Then, take out all bolts securing the front cover to the engine block and remove the front cover, noting that on Oldsmobile engines, the water pump will come off with the cover. For installation on Oldsmobile engines, use vise grip pliers to remove dowel pins from the engine block, grinding a chamfer on each pin's end. Cut off excess gasket material at the front of the oil pan until flush with the engine block, and use a gasket scraper to remove all excess from the mating surfaces. Trim about ¼ inch from each end of the new front pan seal, install a new gasket to the engine block and a new front seal on the cover with sealant, then tilt the cover into place, compressing the lower pan seal while guiding it into the cavity. Apply engine oil to bolt threads and loosely install two bolts to hold the cover, then install the dowel pins with the chamfered end first, followed by the water pump with a new gasket. Tighten all bolts to the proper torque specifications and reinstall all components in reverse order, applying lubricant to the front hub seal before installing the crankshaft hub. For Chevrolet engines, ensure all gasket surfaces are clean, trim any protruding gasket material at the front of the oil pan, and apply a ¼-inch bead of silicone sealer at the joint between the oil pan and engine block. Coat the cover gasket with a non-setting sealant, position it on the cover, and loosely install it, starting with the top four bolts and then the lower screws. Apply sealer on the bottom of the cover, install it, and tighten the screws alternately while aligning the dowel pins. Remove the lower screws and install the remaining cover bolts, torquing them to specifications, then install the water pump with new gaskets and follow the removal steps in reverse for the remaining components.
