- Q: How Do You Inspect Universal Joints and CV Joint on Saturn Vue?A: Couplings that connect two rotating parts axis at different angles are coupling known as Universal joints or Cardan joints which comprise a yoke either side of the set and connected by a crosspiece called trunnion. Both ends of the trunnion have cups with needle bearings to allow the transfer of torque load without coming in direct contact and are held in place by snap-rings. This excess wear in the needle roller bearings results in the driveline vibration, noise during acceleration and may in the extreme with totally worn out bearings, metallic squeaking followed with grating and shrieking noise. To measure wear one can take the rear flange of the differential pinion or the front coupling of the half shaft and rotate the driveshaft with the other hand and check whether there is much movement since this is the way significant wear can be detected. Another method includes with the use of prybar, in between the universal joint and the driveshaft or flange to check for loose movement of the part while the vehicle is engaged. The last test is to try to lift the shaft and observe any possible movement of the yokes with their counterparts. In fact, any sign that a universal joint is worn out requires that it be replaced. The constant velocity joint at the forward end of the driveshaft is non separable; in case of wear out of this element or damage of the boot, the front part of the driveshaft has to be replaced.
