  • Q: How to remove and replace the timing belt cover on V6 engine for Saturn LS and LS1?
    A: Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the inner fender splash shield from the right side of the vehicle. Loosen the water pump pulley and power steering pump pulley bolts. Leave the pulleys and the drivebelt on the vehicle at this time. Install an engine support fixture. Remove the engine mount and the drivebelt. Remove the front crankshaft pulley and oil seal. Remove the engine mount bracket from the Timing Cover. Remove the water pump pulley. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Remove the drivebelt tensioner. Disconnect the harness connectors at the Timing Cover and position the wiring harness off to the side. Remove the Timing Cover mounting bolts. Remove the Timing Cover from the engine. Clean the Timing Cover, engine block and inspect the Timing Cover for cracks and damage. If the Timing Cover is damaged or chipped, replace it with a new Timing Cover. Install the Timing Cover to the engine. Tighten the Timing Cover bolts to the specific torque. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal. Reconnect the battery. Add the proper type and quantity of engine oil and coolant. Run the engine and check for leaks.

    A: Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Drain the engine oil. Remove the drivebelt. Remove the drivebelt tensioner from the front cover. Remove the crankshaft pulley. Loosen the right front wheel lug nuts, then raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the right front wheel. Loosen the timing cover fasteners gradually and evenly, then remove the fasteners. Note: Draw a sketch of the timing cover and cover fasteners. Identify the location of all bolts for installation in their original locations. Remove the water pump bolt from the timing cover. Remove the timing cover. Remove the timing cover-to-block gasket. INSTALLATION: Inspect and clean all sealing surfaces of the timing cover and the block. CAUTION: Be very careful when scraping on aluminum engine parts. Aluminum is soft and gouges easily. Severely gouged parts may require replacement. If necessary, replace the crankshaft front oil seal in the timing cover. Install the timing cover gasket on the engine block. CAUTION: The timing cover gasket is reusable. Make sure the gasket has not been damaged. Install a new gasket if necessary. Install the timing cover and cover fasteners. Make sure the hub on the inner rotor is aligned with the flats on the crankshaft and the timing cover fasteners are in their original locations. Tighten the fasteners by hand until the cover is contacting the block around its entire periphery. Install the long water pump bolt. Tighten the bolts to the specific torque. Install the drivebelt and tensioner. Tighten the drivebelt tensioner to the specific torque. Install the crankshaft pulley. Reinstall the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal. Fill the crankcase with the recommended oil. Reconnect the battery. Start the engine and check for leaks. Check all fluid levels.
