Saturn LS Power Steering Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a power steering pump?
A: Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. In order to remove as much fluid as possible from the power steering fluid reservoir, you may use a large syringe or suction gun. When the hoses are disconnected, place a drain pan beneath the vehicle to catch any spilling fluids. To do this on a four-cylinder engine, detach the return hose from the power steering pump, then unscrew over it using flare-nut wrench till it is removed from the pump. Then carefully and gently remove two bolts that mount and go ahead to remove the power steering pump. At last remove retaining clips and detach reservoir from pump assembly. Remove reservoir-to-pump O-ring. Replace it if necessary after examining condition of O-ring at other times than this one for a V6 engine goes apart its air filter housing first. Loosen three screws that secure power steering pump pulley on to pump in question. Remove drive-belt too. Removing drivebelt, unscrew over it using flare-nut wrench till it is removed from the pump especially when you disconnect return hose from power steering pump in accordance with 3 above. After removing these pumps' pulleys, pull out three bolts which hold pump against mounting bracket and uproot its body completely. The pulley hub will probably have to be switched onto your new unit before you install it if you're replacing one of these power steering pumps; often this requires a special puller/remove tool(as explained in 6 below) together with another special device for reinstallation-both are available at most auto parts stores, by the way). The hub should be pressed onto shaft for specified distance measured when taking off old pulley's hub just before installation on new shaft (must go back into same position). Reinstalling requires keeping in mind some details: Tighten fasteners securely (bolt or fitting). When replaced, an 0-ring must also be changed (you will find that out if you have a proper manual). Put on a drive belt. Then fill up reservoir with recommended fluid. You can now bleed air from power steering hydraulic system.
