Q: How to remove and clean the throttle body on a Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe?
A: Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Loosen the hose clamps and remove the air intake duct. On 2003 and 2004 models, detach the accelerator cable from the throttle lever. On 2003 and 2004 models, detach the accelerator cable bracket and set it aside (it's not necessary to detach the cable from the bracket). Clearly label, then detach, all vacuum and coolant hoses from the throttle body. Clamp off or plug the coolant hoses to prevent coolant loss. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the throttle position sensor, idle air control valve, manifold absolute pressure sensor, or mass airflow sensor, as required. On 2005 and later models, disconnect the electrical connector at the throttle body motor. Remove the throttle body mounting bolts/nuts. Detach the throttle body and gasket from the intake manifold. Using a soft cloth and brake system or carburetor cleaner, thoroughly clean the throttle body casting, then blow out all passages with compressed air. Do not clean the throttle position sensor or throttle motor with anything. Just wipe it off with a clean, soft cloth. Installation of the throttle body is the reverse of removal. Tighten the throttle body mounting bolts/nuts to the torque. Check the coolant level, adding as necessary.
