    Q: How do you remove and reinstall the oil pump and timing chains in 3.6L V6 engine on Pontiac G6?
    A: Take off the Timing Chain and timing chain sprocket as a unit by removing the crankshaft sprocket bolt and then removing the sprocket, also note the position of the chain when it is installed. Then, undo the oil pump retaining bolts and then shift the pump away from the end of the crankshaft. Remove the timing chain guide put the pump housing in the vice and unbolt the oil pump cover and withdraw the rotors from the pump body. Pull out the circlip from the side of the pump housing and unscrew the cap, the spring as well as the plunger which forms the oil pressure relief valve. It is recommended that these components be cleaned with solvent and dried and that they should also be examined for signs of damage; one will find that the bolt holes of these components often have damaged threads, and the splined surfaces of the crankshaft sprocket will also show signs of having been damaged. If any of the components are scored, scratched, or worn, remove and replace the entire ODP assembly because at this time no replacement parts are available. If reusing the oil pump, install the pressure relief valve components and rotors on the oil pump base of the housing, fill the clearances between the rotors with clean motor oil and then install the cover and tighten the retainers. Place the oil pump over the pin of the crankshaft in such a way that the teeth of the crankshaft sprocket fit into the teeth of the pump's drive gear such that the pump sits properly on the block. This fitting is designed to be as easy as possible with no special tools needed to tighten the oil pump mounting bolts to the required torque. What remains of the installation continues in the reverse order of removal. Last of all put in oil and coolant if required, start the engine and check whether there are any leaks in the oil and coolant and the oil pressure.
