Pontiac G6 Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when removing the engine head to prevent warpage in four cylinder engine on Pontiac G6?
A: The head must be removed on a cold engine since taking off the head while hot results into warping of the head. First of all, connect the hollow of cable our from negative battery terminal. First of all, it is necessary to wait until the engine becomes cool; then you have to remove the cooling system including the radiator inlet hose. Then, the drivebelt and the drivebelt tensioner should be taken off and, subsequently, the Exhaust Manifold and the intake manifold. Breaking the Timing Chain, take off and identify with the help of tape the electrical connectors of the cylinder head that hinder the removal. Screw out the cylinder head bolts untightening each of them once by 1/4 turn and dispose the bolts. Always use pry bar at the corners of the head to block mating surface, do not pry at the gasket sealing area. Remove the final bolts and lift the cylinder head off the engine, if you meet with any resistance than gently tap them off using a wood block and hammer and always place them on wooden blocks so as not to damage the gasket sealing surface. Take off the old cylinder head gasket and keep in mind which way it has to be installed. Mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block before installation should be free of contaminants, clean it with new razor blade-type scraper using lacquer thinner or acetone. The components can be damaged if anything other than a new razor blade is used. In the event that there is oil on the mating surfaces when installation is being carried out, the gasket may not fit well and the result may be leaks. Use shop rags to cover the sectors of the engine that are exposed to airflow to allow easy eviction of the debris that falls into the cylinders using a vacuum cleaner. Inspect the top of what's called the 'engine block' and the underside of the 'cylinder head' for any flaws. Before installing the new gasket, ensure that it fits properly on the dowels of the block; then place the cylinder head nicely over the engine block without shifting the gasket. Fit new cylinder head bolts and torque tighten them to the value stamped on their heads in sequence as recommended. The cylinder head main bolts and the other four bolts of slightly larger diameter at the front side are done in part one and part two respectively while the last part involves tightening . Place a tick mark on each of the major main cylinder head bolts so as to identify those that were tightened an additional 155 degrees. It is used a torque angle method for head bolt tightening and for tightening with high precision a torque angle gauge can be used. Continue to fit the timing chain, exhaust manifold and intake manifold, the rest of the procedure is done in reverse of removal. Last but not the least, the terminals of the battery has to be connected, engine oil and filter has to be changed, cooling system has to be refilled and then the engine is to be turned on and should be observed for any signs of oil or coolant leakage.
