Pontiac Firebird Idle Control Valve Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What is the proper procedure for replacing fuel injectors, throttle position sensor, idle air control valve and throttle body assembly on Pontiac Firebird?
A: Open the fuel injector rail pressure release valve, then disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery before turning off the anti-hood jacking system and on Delco Loe II audio system, do the same. Covers and plates, air cleaner housing assembly, EOx20EGC1100 adapter, and gaskets should be removed. The Fuel Pressure Regulator is incorporated in the fuel meter cover and if the assembly is being worked on or the fuel meter cover is being changed, the entire holder has to be replaced. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the fuel injectors, remove the fuel meter cover screws and then remove the fuel meter cover. Take out the gaskets and clean out all previous gasket material used as they are not to be reused. Clean the metal casing and any lenses which are on the top or sides of the cover if it is located in a retail store, replace the gaskets and seals if required. When refitting the fuel meter cover use the Loctite 262 on the screws before reconnecting the electrical connectors to the injector and the negative terminal of the battery. Ensure to do the check with the engine off, but with the ignition on prior to reinstalling the air cleaner assembly. When replacing fuel injectors ensure that they are of the exact part number, disconnect the connectors and finally dismantle the fuel meter cover assembly using the special spanner but without having to remove the gasket. Remove the injectors, remove the O-rings and filters then check for contamination. Before you fit the new O-rings it is important to ensure that they are soaked in automatic transmission fluid. After putting the injectors properly in place, equally replace the fuel meter cover. By doing so you will ensure that there are no more leaks after having reconnected the battery. For the throttle position sensor, one should remove this component from the throttle body but should not use any liquid cleaners for the same and then fix the lever in the right manner when reinstalling this component. For the idle air control valve, as given in the procedure disconnect the connector then disconnect the valve, remove the old gasket and make sure that the new one fits correctly. This pintle should be adjusted as required prior to being reattached. To disassemble the fuel meter body assembly, first, disconnect the connectors, then uninstall the assembly and undo the fuel lines connection also note the position of the nut for reassembly. Ensure that gaskets have been replaced well and all joints are well tightened. For the throttle body assembly there should be disconnecting of all connectors, removal of linkages and the throttle body together with removal of the gasket will also be dumped. Wash the assembly without immersing any delicate parts, look for signs of wear and tear and replace the IAC valve and TPS. Tighten all the joints, check that there is no interference of the accelerator pedal, and connect the negative terminal of the battery. They are to check for oil leaks, warm up the engine and also to adjust the idle speed. When you find it necessary, then follow the laid down procedures of synchronization and alignment.
